Sense and Sensitivity

Sense And Sensitivity

I remember being ten very well. It was one of the best periods of my life. Great friends, school relatively cool, good music, no worries. I often think of this age with enormous fondness. So I was really interested to read that the age ten is a recognised turning point. Author Glennon Doyle explains in her book, Untamed, that according to her research “Ten is when Children begin to hide who they are in order to become what the world expects them to be.”

A couple of years ago, one of my Spiritist acquaintances told our group in passing that her parents had been fairly strict with her when she was a young girl because they could see she was quite… now, here’s where I hesitate for the word. Spiritual? (she is a medium and like many children had communications with spirits when she was a child). Head in the clouds? Dreamer? Sensitive? Exuberant? I’m hesitant on the word but I could understand what happened.

It amazes me how many spiritual, sensitive or creative beings are bridled either in their childhood or later on as adults. They get labelled as quirky or disturbed; their spiritual, sensitive or creative energy is locked down, sucked out of them.

Today’s featured quote is also from that same book. The author is talking about her daughter. Recently, I’ve been voicing the hope that sensitive connected children can be heard and that their talents be recognised, cherished and simply allowed to emerge rather than having a label slapped onto their forehead. Even the labels of HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) or Indigo child can be damaging to some.

When sensitive children are supported in flourishing, the results can be ‘spectacular’, even though they are merely being themselves (a striking example is Akiane – if you’re interested check out her story https://akiane.com/about-akiane/) and can bring much calm and healing and SENSE to our planet in need.
