The Lemurian Fellowship – Located in Romana, California
For adherents of the Lemurian Fellowship, Lemuria is a place that will re-emerge as a final utopia or as a flourishing continent. The Lemurian Fellowship does not distinguish between Lemuria and Mu. The Fellowship notes, “The culture of Mu, or Lemuria, was far-flung.” For some, especially those that participate in New Age practices, Lemuria exists on a higher frequency and is only available to an elect few, like Rudolph Steiner’s Akashic Records. Lemuria is not so much a physical place as it is a goal for spiritual achievement. These beliefs led Robert Stelle to establish the Lemurian Fellowship, first in Chicago, Illinois then Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and finally, Ramona, California. Prophesies and ideological pronouncements that do not materialize are difficult for movements to negotiate; for the Lemurian Fellowship, prophecies are reconfigured as having symbolic significance, postponed, and displaced to another realm of existence.
In the Lemurian Fellowship’s book, The Sun Rises, Stelle writes that a final utopia will emerge where there is a balance of technology, spirituality, and science. Churchward also writes in Cosmic Forces of Mu also believes that “Nations with their cravings for power and wealth will disappear. There will be one great union of the communities of humankind, each one being in truth a brother to the other. Then The Supreme only knows what is to follow.” Stelle outlines the help humans were given by the Lords of Venus and Mercury over 2,400 generations ago: “Helpers from Venus and Mercury were brought in by Lord Hiroto to teach these people many things new even to the Elders. Women were trained to spin and weave so that skins for dress were used less and less as cloth began to take their place.”
The Lemurian Fellowship recounts an important message the Lemurian and Atlantean civilizations have taught modern civilization: Failure has followed success in every civilization of which we know, just as it followed the great and unequaled success enjoyed in both the Mukulian and Atlantean Empires. In short, Lemuria failed because of its proud nature. The Lemurian Fellowship warns humankind that “the time for decisive action has come! Summon your courage and begin at once to work objectively toward the fulfillment of your God-given purpose in life!”
Phylos, The Tibetan
According to The Lemurian Fellowship, Phylos the Tibetan, who met Frederick Spencer Oliver, Issachar, and the Lemurian-Atlantean group of Theo-Christic Adepts, is a member of the Order of Azariah. Frederick Spencer Oliver (1866-1899) was an important figure who placed a Lemurian colony within Mt. Shasta. In the summer of 1883, Oliver was marking the boundaries of his parent’s property in Yreka, California. He claims to have channeled Phylos, The Tibetan, who helped write two books through amanuensis: Dweller on Two Planets (1952[1895]) and An Earth Dwellers Return (1940). Oliver notes “In writing as such amanuensis, I am always conscious of the presence calling himself Phylos, whenever he chooses to come to me, and sometimes I see as well as hear and speak with him, though vision is rare.”
Phylos, as channeled through Oliver, explains that he had been Prince Zilm on Atlantis and lived a second life as Walter Pierson, a nineteenth-century gold miner. As Pierson, Phylos met a Chinese laborer, Quong, who taught him the secret doctrines. The following incarnation as Phylos, he was appointed guardianship of Mt. Shasta and its mysteries. Oliver writes that human knowledge of life, “the Great Mystery, is insufficient for the needs of the soul.” The book concludes, “The wrath of God is love’s severity. All shall be converted from the lower into the higher.” Both of Oliver’s books are important in establishing a mythos for Mt. Shasta as a Lemurian colony.
John Ballou Newbrough
John Ballou Newbrough, who wrote Oahspé (1891), recounts another version of the Lemurian civilization. Similar to Frederick Spencer Oliver, Newbrough’s writings were the result of automatic writing, dictated to him by spirits while in trance. According to Newbrough, humans emerged 72,000 years ago when angels interbred with the A’su, a sea-like animal. The resulting breed was called I’hins. The I’hins and A’su produced the Druks, which are the African and Asiatic people today. Newbrough called Lemuria, Pan and predicted it would become inhabited by the Kosmon race, a combination of all the present races. This new era was predicted to begin in 1980.
The Lemurian Fellowship Today
The Lemurian Fellowship is under the authorization of the Lemurian Grand Council. The Lemurian Fellowship writes, “The Lemurian Philosophy, as it is being taught today by the Lemurian Fellowship, stems from the original teaching of Christ.” Christ was also known as Melchizedek, the first Emperor of Lemuria, and Christ reappeared as Poseidon’s in Atlantis. According to the Bible, Melchizedek was the high priest and king of Salem who blessed Abraham. In the Dead Sea Scrolls, Melchizedek acts as God’s eschatological agent, though there is no evidence that Melchizedek was a real historical figure.
The purpose of the Lemurian Fellowship is to disseminate the Lemurian Cosmo-Conception and bring about the New Order of the Ages, ruled by the Lemurian Citizenry. Although all of the Elder Brothers were cooperatively in helping mankind to advance, the Lemurian Brotherhood is the one that is responsible for the release of plans and information relating to the forthcoming civilization.
The Lemurian Fellowship’s Evidence of Lemuria
The Lemurian Fellowship points to archaeological evidence in the Polynesian islands, especially Ponape, Nan Madol, and Malden Island as proof of Lemuria. The Lemurian Fellowship also argues that the South Sea Islands are just the tops of mountains, which indicate a large landmass existing underneath the water. The Lemurian Fellowship believes that the city, Metalanim on Ponape Island in the Caroline Islands may have housed as many as two million people. There is archaeological evidence of massive walls, earthworks, temples, and waterways. Also, blocks were moved and fitted without mortar.
Archaeological evidence shows that Nan Madol was a series of small artificial islands linked by a network of canals, similar to the construction of Venice, Italy. However, archaeological investigations show that Nan Madol was established in the eighth century AD, not old enough to be constructed by Lemurians. There may have been an occupation as early as 200 BC but the megalithic architecture was not begun until the twelfth century AD. Malden Island is today, an uninhabited island belonging to the Republic of Kiribati.
The Palace of the Virgins at Cusco, Peru, and Tiahuanaco at Lake Titicaca in the Andes Mountains are also attributed to Lemurian establishment. Lake Titicaca is unique because it is 13,000 feet above sea level. According to archaeological evidence, Tiahuanaco was the center of a pre-Incan civilization believed to have been built by the Aymara, native to the Andes region of Bolivia and Peru. The Aymara people became a subject of the Inca and later the Spanish in the sixteenth century. Blocks weighing up to one-hundred tons were transported over several miles. There is also evidence found of ceramics and painted pottery. However, archaeologists date these sites to 500 AD, with additional construction between 1100 and 1300. The artifacts are not old enough to be a part of the Lemurian civilization.
The Lemurian Fellowship maintains that the Temple of the Sun in Syria and Angkor Thom in Cambodia are areas as evidence of Lemurian occupation. Baalbek is a temple complex located northeast of Beirut, Lebanon. However, archaeological evidence shows humans inhabited the area in the Early Bronze Age (2900-2300 BC), not old enough to correspond with the estimated dates of the Lemurian civilization.
Other evidence for Lemuria is found in Cambodia, Angkor Thom was built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries by King Jayavarman VII (1181-1220?) and is located by the river Siem Reap. Each gate faces the four cardinal directions, symbolically acting as a microcosm of the universe. The temple of Bayon is located in the center of the axis. Temples within the walls of Angkor Thom include Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King, Prah Palilay, Tep Pranam, and Prasat Suor Prat. These temples were supposedly based on the model of the capital of Atlantis. For members of the Lemurian Fellowship, these ancient sites testify to a worldwide Lemurian civilization.
