Tips For Jewelry Making

Here are some simple tips to get you started in Jewelry making!

       1. Select the type of jewelry that interests you the most

The first time you decide that you want to try your hand at jewelry making can be really overwhelming because there are so many options.

Perhaps you prefer to wear pearl jewelry, or perhaps you prefer the sleek look and personalization of metallic embossed jewelry.  You may want to work with leather, clay or glass.

       2. Master Some Basic Skills

Whether you’re looking to work with pearls, metallic clay, or any other type of jewelry first, there are a few skills you need to know about almost any project.

       3. Invest in Quality Tools

For a first try, it can work very well to “borrow” wire cutters and pliers from your home toolbox.  But the reality is that the better tools you work with, the simpler the process and the better your project will be.

At first glance this may seem like a small investment, especially when it comes to specialized tools such as metal seals, etc., but in the long run they pay off handsomely if you can design your own jewelry and design it.  Can’t buy.  Jewellery.  and/or sell to others.

       4. Learn Vocabulary

What is the difference between a head pencil and an eye pencil?  Is 12 gauge wire thicker or thinner than 20 gauge wire?  And what are “realizations” anyway?  you Oughta Know!

Before buying anything, make sure you know what you need.  This saves you time, expense and frustration if you have to return and exchange the wrong items.

       5. Literally Get Supplies

There are endless ways to buy jewelry items.  Online stores like Goody Beads, Lima Beads, and P&J Tool Supply have extensive inventory, and you can always find plenty on Etsy.

However, before choosing your favorite online vendors, we recommend finding a local craft store and literally getting your hands on some of these tools and accessories.

       6. Have an Organized and Dedicated Workspace

There is nothing more frustrating for a handyman (or his family!) than random supplies scattered everywhere.  If you can’t find what you need, you’re wasting valuable time that could have been used to create.

Choose a room in the house or at least a specific table, desk, drawer, etc. that you can dedicate solely to your hobby.  Once you have them, sort your supplies and mark, mark, mark.  There are all kinds of jewelry making storage ideas such as inexpensive containers and boxes that already have partitions to store various beads, found items, etc.
