Sharon showcased its downtown retailers Saturday in what has become a solid contribution to the holiday shopping season.
That’s one reason why Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010. Sharon tweaked this year’s annual event.
In past years the main tree lighting ceremony was held after dusk. This year it was held at noon.
“We wanted people to see and shop in the downtown during daylight, Sherris Moreira, owner of The Small Town Storyteller said. The local marketing business was hired by the city to plan and promote the event.
Sharon Middle-High School Choir sang a medley of Christmas carols as part of the ceremony.
Roughly 100 attended the ceremony. But store owners said they had customers tell them they skipped that event to shop.
They may be small, but these retailers give cities a charm that big box stores can’t.
“We’re booming here,’’ Odin Smith, owner of The Emerald Tablet store.
Smith describes the business as an artisan apothecary and metaphysical gallery. The shop’s new age feel to it sells goods such as precious stones, jewelry, incense and teas.
The ceremony attracted Christine Mielecki, a resident of Adamsville, Crawford County.
“This is my first time here,’’ Mielecki said as she wandered through Emerald Tablet searching for a ring.
“I want something sparkly,’’ she said.
Smith got her interested in a ring holding an aquamarine gem.
“It represents prosperity and luck,’’ Smith told her.
“I need a lot of prosperity,’’ Mielecki responded with a laugh.
COVID-19 financially battered the restaurant trade over the past 18 months and four were honored at the ceremony: Haitian Sensation, Donna’s Diner, Lulu Beans Café and Hangry’s Sub Shop.
“Its been hard but we’re getting through it,” Joseph Altenor, owner of Haitian Sensation said after the ceremony.
Donna’s Diner was nearly filled shortly after the festivities.
“This is what we wanted to see, daylight shoppers,” Laura Ackley, the diner’s general manager said.
Saturday wasn’t all about shopping. Robert Grimm operates His Right Hand, a faith-based photography store.
“We believe in hope and love for the community,” Grimm said.
