The temple is believed to be over 1000 years old and was built in the early 11th century by King Chola Kulothunga Chola-I. In ancient times Kanipakam was called “Viharapuri”. Lord Ganesha at this temple is strongly believed to be the Lord of justice. Devotees take a dip in the sacred water of the temple tank and swear before the idol of the presiding deity to get rid of their sins. Interestingly, there have been instances where the power of Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka made the miscreants accept their faults even before stepping into the judicial court or the inner chambers of the temple or immediately after taking the holy dip.

History as per legends, Temple is worshipped by Three Brothers. there kanipakam village lived three physically disabled brothers. while one of the brothers was blind, the other was dumb and the other one was deaf. for their livelihood, they cultivated a small piece of land. they made living that place, one day where they were digging a well to fetch water to their field, irrigating land via piccotta systems. during digging process, their utter dismay, they discovered that the water of the well had dried up.

one of the brothers got down the well and began digging its bed with an iron shade. the device they were using, suddenly hit a hard object. as they dug further, they noticed that there was blood oozing out from it, turning the well water red. to everyone’s surprise. Suddenly all the three brothers became normal getting rid of their disabilities. As soon as the villagers came to know about this miracle, they came to the well and tried to deepen the well further. But their attempt proved futile because the ‘swayambhu’ idol (the self-manifested) of Lord Vinayaka emerged from the swirling waters. The Deity of lord Ganesha still rests in the water.

“KANI” means one and a quarter land “PAKAM” means flew of water into the land i.e., irrigation. The indication of this has been recognized as KANIPARAKAM – ultimately calling as KANIPAKAM, which is the transcended Tamil word.
