Let’s create and edit your Wiki with the special service in MacOS

Not so long ago we told you about the Wiki service. You already know how to create groups with different access levels in your Wiki. Now we are going to tell you how to create a blog or calendar via this service.

Creating a new Wiki

Before starting our work, let’s learn how it looks for somebody who is included to the ‘Students’ group.

  1.    Open the Wiki service, it is located in the Server app’s sidebar.
  2.    Launch your Safari browser.
  3.    Click the link that appears on the page.
  4.    Log in. You can do it at the page’s top.
  5.    Check if you have logged in as one of the ‘Students’.
  6.    Click the “+” button after you have already logged in. It appears at the top.

Remember that ‘Students’ can’t create Wikis and here are no Wikis to look at. So, we need a ‘Teacher’ to create it for us!

What should he do?

  1.    Log out. You will find this button at the top of the page.
  2.    Log in as a ‘Teacher’.
  3.    Click the familiar to you “+” button.
  4.    Choose the “New Wiki link” option.
  5.    Choose and type the name of your future Wiki.
  6.    Continue and type “Students” in the window where permissions can be set.
  7.    Let them read and write in your Wiki.
  8.    Make sure that other users don’t have access. Click “Continue”.
  9.    Click the “Create” button.
  10.   Click “Go to Wiki” button.

The new Wiki would open with a standard text about how you should work here,

Now you can edit it, add new users and finally, log in as another user that has all necessary permissions already.

Let’s make changes to your Wiki!

  1.    Click the pencil icon at the right top of the Wiki.
  2.    Press the “Return” button for 2 times on the keyboard after placing your cursor at the end of Wiki materials.
  3.    Save the changes.
  4.    Now they should be visible on the Wiki.

How to add a read-only user to the Wiki?

  1.    Click the gear icon (Action menu) at the top right.
  2.    Choose the “Permissions” tab at the left.
  3.    Type a user’s name in the ‘access’ line. A user has to be not in ‘Teachers’ or ‘Students’ groups.
  4.    Point on the “Read only” option.
  5.    Save the changes.
  6.    Choose the Lock at the right top of the Wiki window.
  7.    Log out now.
  8.    Now you are able to see a web login.
  9.    Log in as a member of the ‘Students’ group.
  10.   Go to the Edit pencil and make some edits.
  11.   Save them.

We want to remind you that ‘History’ section can be found in the right of the Wiki. It tells a user historical information about edits which were made to your Wiki.

How to look at who had made changes

  1.    Choose the “Activity” button. It is at the top-right.
  2.    Find your Wiki in the list and open it.
  3.    You can see what changes were made by every user – just click on the nickname.
  4.    You can restore a previous version of the Wiki by clicking the relevant button at the top.
  5.    Logout from your Wiki. That’s all!
  6.    Now we can finally log in as view-only user. Do it.

Here you can see no pencil at the top. But don’t forget that such a user can see edits made by other users anyway. Still, they can’t view the previous versions of Wiki.

Let’s create a calendar and a blog in your Wiki!

It is the last and one of the most interesting steps in our Wiki journey. Note that if you are going to create one, you should have a turned-on Server’s calendar service.

  1.    Log in as a ‘Teacher’ user.
  2.    Click Action menu at the top.
  3.    Go to “Settings”.
  4.    Choose “General” there.
  5.    Locate the services and click on the boxes near “Blog” and “Calendar”.
  6.    Save the changes.

After you save it, two links should appear at the Wiki’s top.

The Calendar will view events related to your Wiki. By the way, you can create and add your personal events there.

Another link is for Blog. Don’t forget that anybody who can manage Calendar can edit your Blog too.
