Disable Windows 10 Automatic Updates

Microsoft has made it mandatory for Windows 10 users to update their computer. In Windows 10 there is no direct option to disable or turn off Updates for Windows 10. In previous version Windows 8.1 you can control updates download settings from Windows updates settings in Control Panel.

With Windows 8.1 and earlier versions, users get four options for Windows Update's behavior, which include:

1. Download and Install Windows Updates Automatically
2. Download Windows Updates automatically but Choose when to Install them
3. Check for Updates but Choose when to Download and Install them
4. Never check for, Download, or Install Updates

But In Windows 10, the options for Windows Update are cut to only two, which include:
Check, Download, Install, and Reboot automatically
Check, Download, Install automatically and then choose to Reboot

By hiding this update settings Microsoft making sure everyone gets latest updates related to security patches and new Windows features.

If you really wants to disable Windows 10 automatic updates then you can use one of the following methods and turn off update

1. Using  Local Group Policy Editor

2. Disabling update services.

3. Edit Registry Setting

3. Setup A Metered Connection (Wifi only)

Warning: automatic updates are typically a good thing and we recommend leaving them on in general. As such these methods should primarily be used for preventing a troublesome update from automatically reinstalling (the dreaded crash loop) or stopping a potentially troublesome update from installing in the first place.

1. Using  Local Group Policy Editor

Note local policy not support home edition support up to pro editions.

On Start Menu Type Administrative tools and open it.

Once the administrative tools window has been opened, double-click on the shortcut “Local Security Policy.”

Now group policy window will open

On the left-side in Group policy window open the following path to change the Windows Update settings
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update

On the right-hand find “Configure Automatic Updates” right-click on it and select Edit from menu.
you will notice this settings is not configured yet by default. So, first select Enabled option from top and then set the options. Set “Notify for download and notify for install” option for configure automatic updating and click Apply button to save the settings and close the window.

Now, reboot your computer to let the changes applied. When you logged into your computer again and you will notice the changes in Windows Updates Settings as shown below (Updates are ready to download and click the download button if you want to download and install updates manually).

2. Disabling update services.

Right-click on Windows Start button and select “Computer Management” option from the menu.
On the Computer management window in left-panel, expand “Services and Applications” option and then select “Services”.

All the running and disabled services will be listed in right-side panel.

From services list, find a service with the name “Windows Update”. Right-click on this service and select Stop option if this service is already running.

open command prompt as administrator and type command Gpupdate after update policy

Setup A Metered Connection

to save bandwidth Microsoft confirms the operating system will only automatically download and install updates it classifies as ‘Priority’.
Open the Settings app (Win + I)
Open the ‘Network & Internet’ section
Open ‘Wi-Fi’ and click ‘Advanced Options’
Toggle ‘Set as metered connection’ to ‘On’
Note: If your PC uses an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet the Metered Connection option will be disabled as it works with Wi-Fi connections only

using Registry edit
Alternatively for Windows 10 users without group policy access:

Open the Run command (Win + R), in it type: regedit and press enter
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

In there create a ‘32-bit DWORD’ value called ‘AuOptions’ and under ‘Value Data’ type 2 and click ‘OK’
Open the Settings app (Win + I) and navigate to -> Update and Security -> Windows Updates. Click ‘Check for updates’ which applies the new configuration setting

Restart
