Windows 10 brought many new features and improvements when compared to Microsoft's previous operating systems. There were few minor limitations in the Command Prompt in the earlier versions of windows which is now upgraded. New Released Windows 10, Command Prompt has finally gotten some much needed improvements.



The improvements to the Windows 10 command-line console make it much easier to use programs such as Command Prompt and PowerShell, and you can enable the new features simply by configuring them within the console properties.

Microsoft also added registry settings to support the new options, which makes it possible to toggle them on and off at the desktop or through centralized management.

New editing options

To enable the new features in the Windows 10 Command Prompt, you must disable the legacy version. First launch the Command prompt by typing Command Prompt into the search box on the menu bar and clicking the app.



Within the Command Prompt, right-click the title bar and select Properties. Select the Options tab and then clear the Use legacy console (requires relaunch) check box.


 Close the Properties dialog box and then close the Command Prompt Window. Follow the steps above to open it once again.

Once the Command Prompt window is open, open Properties again. You will notice that you now have selections enabled under both Edit Options and Text Selection.



  Keyboard Shortcuts in the Command Prompt  
After long time awaited simple feature that was not available in existing windows operating systems like windows 7. you can now copy any command from outside and directly paste inside the command prompt using CTRL + C or CTRL + INS and CTRL + V or SHIFT + INS shortcut keys.


select the text within the command prompt you can also press the CTRL + A shortcut key which will select the current cursor text.

Text Selection

You can use the below shortcut keys to select the text in command prompt:

SHIFT + Left Arrow key – Used to select one character at a time to your left from the current cursor position.
SHIFT + Right Arrow key – Used to select one character at a time to your right from the current cursor position.
SHIFT + Up Arrow key – Used to select one line at a time upwards from the current cursor position.
SHIFT + Down Arrow key – Used to select one line at a time downwards from the current cursor position.
SHIFT + Page Up key – Used to select one page at a time upwards.
SHIFT + Page Down key – Used to select one page at a time downwards.
CTRL + SHIFT + Right Arrow key – Used to select one word at a time to the right from the current cursor position.
CTRL + SHIFT + Left Arrow key – Used to select one word at a time to the left from the current cursor position.

Improved usability

The Windows 10 command-line console also adds a few other features that make it easier to use. For example, resizing the console is now much more intuitive. Before, the only way to change the layout settings was through the console properties. But now, you can drag the corner of the window to resize it, and the buffer and window sizes are adjusted automatically.
