How to fix Windows 10 Freezes with black screen after waking from sleep

Some times when the computer has been inactive over a certain period of time, windows automatically go to sleep mode in the case of laptops,the led has been closed. when you come to work and press any key on laptop or desktop windows weakup but remains a black screen with showing white cursor after wait long time windows didn't start properly.Not just laptops, even hybrid of Laptop and Tablet i.e. Surface Pro users are also facing similar issues, that only screen turn off, but board light, fan etch would be still working ,The only way you have to restart the windows to start the windows normally.


Many users who are using Laptops and Desktops from different manufacturers are facing This issues Windows 10 showing only black screen after waking from sleep. It is due to the new feature Windows introduced for the versions 8, 8.1 and 10 called Hybrid Shutdown. The idea of it is to minimize shutdown and booting time by hibernating the kernel session, as opposed to completely shutting it down. However, there are still some bugs and errors in the feature, which lead to the shutdown process not being completed and result in the computer freezing on black screen after waking from sleep windows 10.



In order to battle this issue, many people have resorted to actually forcefully shutting down their computer by holding down the power button and then turning it back on again. With the latest offering of Windows 10, Microsoft tried to fix up many of the older problems with time to time updates. but Windows is a massive operating system and not even Microsoft can fix all of its problems in one iteration. if you are also suffering with this error here we have some tips to fix Windows Freezes with black screen after waking from sleep windows 10.

Turn of Hibernation On windows 10


Most of Times Turning off the Hibernation option On windows 10 and 8.1 can fix this issue. when you turn off the hibernation mode windows never to to Hibernat / sleep mode and you didn't face any black screen. to do this here fallow bellow steps.

First open Command Prompt to do this Click on your Start Menu and type “Command Prompt”, and open the first result as administrator. Now when command prompt opens type bellow command and press ok.

powercfg /h off



After running the command – it will give you no output if it worked – simply restart your PC.

This will turn off the Hibernation feature on your PC and hope after turn off the Hibernation feature you didnt face this Freezeing and black screen issue after waking from sleep .

Turn off Fast Startup

As discuss before the  main reason behind this error is new introduced Hybrid Shutdown Feature on windows 10. This feature minimize shutdown and booting time by hibernating the kernel session. as opposed to completely shutting it down. However, there are still some bugs and errors in the feature, which lead to the shutdown process not being completed and result in the computer freezing on black screen after waking from sleep windows 10. So turnoff this Hybrid Shutdown Feature ( Fast Startup ) can fix This issue. 

Fallow bellow steps to Turn off Fast Startup on Windows 10 and 8.1. 

First Click on your Start Menu and type “Power Options”, and open the power options window here click on “Choose what the power button does” on the left pane.


Now Here Click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable” on the top of this page.


Now Scroll down you will find “Turn on Fast Startup” and uncheck it. 


Thats all  Now save the changes and close it, and restart your PC 

Update / Reinstall your display adapter driver

If the display driver is outdated, corrupted or not compatible with Windows 10 Then it may cause the black screen on Windows 10. so if above both methods not work then Update / Reinstall your display adapter driver can fix your issue. Here fallow bellow steps

First Start your windows into Safe Mode with Networking.

If you are not aware about safe mode Read How to boot into safe mode in windows 10 and 8.1. for windows 7 Just Restart the windows and press F8 Key while booting process you will got the advanced boot options window here use the up / own arrow key and select on safe mode with networking. ( note : safe mode with networking require because driver update we require the internet connection )


Once your PC is in Safe Mode, Now move to Device manger where you can update or reinstall installed device drivers.

To Open Device manager press Win + R key on keyboard and type devmgmt.msc and click ok


This will open the Windows Device manager window. Here find and Expand Display adapter.
Right-click on the installed display adapter driver and select update .


Now Select Search automatically for updated driver software. Wait for Windows 10 to find and automatically download the best driver.

If this results windows already install best driver then try to uninstall the installed display driver and reinstall latest updated driver for this. you can download latest driver from bellow link.

Download Intel HD Graphic Driver

Download AMD Graphic Driver

Download Nvdia Graphic Driver

Here to uninstall find the Display Adapters and expend it Here Find and double click on your Video driver name. It will open its properties. Click on Driver tab. Now click on Uninstall. Restart PC. Now download the latest version from internet. Install it.

Shut down the RunOnce processes

There might be a problem with one or more RunOnce processes. for this just Disable the RunOnce32.exe or RunOnce.exe. If you find any that are running:

To do this first boot windows into safe mode then. Right-click Start bar and select Task Manager.
On taskmanager move to services tab and check  for any instances of RunOnce32.exe or RunOnce.exe. If you find any that are running:

In Processes, select the item, and select End task.
In Services, right-click the item, and select Stop.and Restart your PC.

Run a SFC to Repair Corrupted System files

Some times due to corrupt system Windows 10 Freezes with black screen after waking from sleep, and windows get problematic like slow start not perform well black screen after system startup or waking up. .for this use the inbuilt system file checker tool to fix this issue. System File Checker is a free utility which allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. SFC utility will remove most windows problems.

To Run the system file check tool first open command prompt To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.



If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. Now this will open windows command prompt . At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow


The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache. this scanning process will take some time. wait untill complete the scanning process upto 100 % . when scanning process completes Restart the windows.

Make sure windows have latest updates installed

It’s very important that your operating system is up-to-date, as these updates are created specifically to fix issues like this. Check for updates of windows and its drivers. Updating can work greatly. It fixes many bugs. So, You will have a good chance to get rid of Freezes with black screen problem.

To check and install available windows updates fallow the steps Click the Windows Start  button and open Settings. Now Click Update & security.


 Click the Check for updates button and then install all updates found.

Check hard disk for Bed Sectors and errors

One more cause for this issue could just be random data corruption on the hard disk preventing it from going to sleep properly  to check if this is the issue you could put your computer to sleep and check if the hard disk indicator light on your computer turns off or not. If it does not, this might be what is causing your issue.

Aslo preform the chkdsk tool to Repair Hard disk for corruption or bed Sectors. for this first Open Command Prompt as Administrator. Just press Windows Flag Key + X from your keyboard and choose Command (Admin). It is for windows 10 or 8. But for 7, Vista or XP right click on command prompt and choose Run as Administrator.
Now type type chkdsk c:  /f /r /x  and press Enter.


You may be ask for restart your PC. Then press Y and press Enter. when Pc restart this will scan your pc for Hard disk Errors and It will fix problems automatically.


Chekc your network settings

Click on your Start Menu and type “Network and Sharing”, and open the Network and Sharing Center. Now click “Change adapter settings” on the left pane. Now right click on your active Internet adapter and click Properties, Now click the Configure button on top right and go to the Advanced tab.


Over here, find “Wake on Magic Packet” and set it to Disabled, do the same with “Wake on Pattern Match”. Click OK and save the settings, then restart your PC 

Take Out of the Battery
If you are using a laptop, unplug your computer and take out of the battery. Then hold on the power button and wait for a little while. Put the battery back in the computer, plug it and restart your computer.
