Error 0x80070057 indicates that the windows updates have failed and there are numerous reasons for the error to pop-up which could be corrupt windows update components, previous updates that failed and caused corruption with the system files needed to pack and unpack update packages, and apply them 0x80070057 number is the hexadecimal error number, and is common Error in Windows 10, 8.1 and 7.

Windows 10 having a inbuilt Troubleshooting tool to fix Windows update related error. It’s the easiest method to try, so go ahead and run it first.

Head over to the Microsoft support site and download the troubleshooter (direct download link). Once downloaded, open the destination folder and then execute the application.

To manually run the Troubleshooting tool click on start search and type Troubleshooting. and click the trouble shooting as shown bellow picture.


when the troubleshooting window open click on view all on left side. now scroll down and select windows update. this will open windows update troubleshooting window. click Advanced Settings and you’ll find an “Apply repairs Automatically” tick on it and click next.


this will check the system for errors and problems which prevent to install updates this which can take a few minutes to complete and fix them itself.



After complete the troubleshooting it should hopefully clear up the problems. Now Restart the windows and again check for updates  once again.

Delete Windows SoftwareDistribution Folder

When you failed to finish Windows 10 anniversary update, it might because the update files which may go out of data or error occurred to the files. Therefore, you may also try to delete all content in the folder where you download Windows 10 anniversary update file and re-download the files again:

Open Command Prompt, right-click the Start menu (or press Windows+X), choose “Command Prompt (Admin)” and then click Yes to allow it to run with administrative privileges. net stop dosvc


Now Go to C: > Windows > SoftwareDistribution > DataStore and to C: > Windows > Software Distribution > Downloads Delete all the files in the folder.


 It may ask you for administrator permission. Give it.Don’t worry. There’s nothing vital here. Windows Update will recreate what it needs the next time you run it.

Now Again move to command prompt and restart the stopped services to to this type bellow commands one by one and press enter key.

net start wuauserv

net start bits

net start dosvc

When the service has restarted, you can close Command Prompt and restart Windows. Give Windows Update another try and see if your problem has been fixed.You will be able to download and install the updates successfully.

Use the System File Checker

Windows has an inbuilt System File Checker tool we can use to scan the system for any potentially corrupted files. This tool will detail and potentially fix any unexpected corruptions, returning the system to good working state.

To Run the system file check tool first open command prompt To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.



At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow


The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

This command can take a little time to complete. Do not close the Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. On completion, you’ll receive one of the following messages:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
Your system did not contain any corrupted files; you need to try another fix for this issue

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
You need to reboot your system into Safe Mode, then run the command

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

WiFi/LAN Disabling

Some times there may be severe corruptions with the update store, which is preventing Anniversary Update from being installed. The solution to fix this issue is to disable the internet, (LAN or WAN) whilst the installer is verifying Anniversary Update Files.

To do this Go to Windows Update and open Check for Updates Click on “Get the Anniversary Update Now” You should now receive a notification asking you to download “Windows10Upgrade28084” Wait for the program to go to the Verifying Download stage, once it hits 100%,  immediately TURN OFF your WiFI or LAN connection to do this

Hold the Windows Key and Press R. Type ncpa.cpl and Click OK.Right Click either your Wireless LAN Adapter or Ethernet LAN Adapter and choose Disable.


 The installation will get stuck around 2%-3%, wait a minute Once the update has finished verifying, you can enable it by right clicking the disabled adapter.

Modify  Windows Registry Editor

If all of above methods doesn’t work, we can make changes to the Windows Registry to fix this Error.

Note :  Before Make any changes on windows registry its Recommended to Create A System Restore point . so that if any things gone wrong while make changes on Registry we can revert back our system to previous working state.

first Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialogue, then type regedit and press Enter. this will open the windows registry editor window. now nevigate to fallowing

Ensure the following registry entries match your own:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX] "IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000



[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings] "UxOption"=dword:00000000

Make the changes if necessary, then reboot your system and attempt the upgrade.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates



Now Right-click SystemCertificates, and create New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Enter the name as CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo, and set the Value to 1. Hit OK, then restart your system.
