Snapchat Updates Guidelines For Discover Publishers To Thwart Fake News, Clickbait

Snapchat is making its move to help curb fake news and clickbait.

Katie Benner of The New York Times reported that Snapchat updates its Guidelines for publishers in its Discover section, advising them to avoid posting photos or images with no news or editorial value, as well as reports on or links to outside websites that potentially share fake news, saying that all content must be fact-checked.

The messaging application also told Benner it plans to release a tool next month for publishers that will allow them to set up an age gate for content or prevent minors from seeing content.

Snapchat vice president of content Nick Bell told Benner:

We have been collaborating closely with all of our publishers, whose content has continued to evolve. We want to be a great partner to all of our editorial partners, and updating our content guidelines to better reflect where our platform is today is an important part of that.

Spokeswoman Rachel Racusen added:

(The updated Discover guidelines aim to) empower our editorial partners to do their part to keep Snapchat an informative, factual and safe environment for everyone.
