Flurry Analytics released a new report, which analyzed the time users Spent in mobile applications in 2016.

The data showed that overall app usage in 2016 grew by 11 percent when compared to 2015, and that time spent in Apps grew by 69 percent.

Messaging and Social apps saw year-over-year session growth of 44 percent, while personalization apps experienced a 46 percent decrease in sessions in 2016.

Overall, Flurry said time spent in messaging and social apps increased by 394 percent in 2016 when compared to 2015. Time spent in games, meanwhile, slipped by 4 percent year-over-year.

In a blog post, Simon Khalaf, senior vice president of Yahoo, commented:

Time spent in social and messaging apps grew by an astounding 394 percent over the past year, proving to be the driver that helped mobile achieve its year-over-year time-spent growth of 69 percent. This is a result of consumers using their social and messaging apps as their voice and video calling utilities, as well as the phenomenon we call Communitainment. With news and magazine sessions down 5 percent and music, media and entertainment up only 1 percent, it’s safe to say that social has absorbed the media industry.
