How To Create A NTFS Partition In Your Hard Disk

If you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer, and looking for a way to create a Ntfs Partition in your Hard Disk, you are in the right page. Here, I have given a step by step tutorial for creating NTFS partition in your Hard drive. Before getting started with the tutorial, let’s find out the definition of an NTFS partition.

What Is An NTFS Partition?

NTFS stands for New Technology File System that determines how your files are stored, organized and named on a volume in your hard disk. NTFS depends on the two technologies such as Basic disks and Volume, and dynamic disks and volumes.

During the format or partitioning of a volume in your hard disk, you can choose the type of file system for the new volume. If you choose the NTFS partition file system, the formatting process will place the NTFS file data structures on your hard disk volume and it will result in increased security for your files.

You can easily partition your hard disk volume without formatting it with NTFS file system. To do that, follow these simple steps.

How To Create A NTFS Partition In Your Hard Disk:

For creating this tutorial, we have used a Windows 7 computer.

Step 1: On your keyboard press Windows + R. This shortcut key will open the Run Command. Type diskmgmt.msc as shown in the screenshot below and press enter.

Step 2: Now, the Disk Management Window will open up, as shown in the below picture. As shown in the screenshot, if your hard disk contains allocated space then head on to step 3 directly. Else create unallocated space first by following the step given here:

  • Right click on your hard disk volume from which you want to create a new partition and then select “Shrink Volume”.

  • Now, the Shrink Volume Dialog Box will open up.

  • Enter the amount of space you want to shrink and then click on the “Shrink” button.
  • This will create a new unallocated space as shown in the screenshot given below.

Step 3: Now to create a new NTFS partition, right-click on the unallocated space and select “New Simple Volume”. This will open up the New Simple Volume Wizard. Simply click on “Next” in the first window.

Step 4: In the next window, specify the volume size and click “Next”.

Once done, select your desired drive letter from the drop down. If not, windows will assign the least available letter by default. Now, click on “Next”.

Step 5: In the next window, choose “Format this volume with the following settings” option and under that select the NTFS File System. Once done, label the volume, select “Perform a quick format” and then click on the “Next” button.

Step 6: Now, verify your selected settings and click on the “Finish” button.

That’s it. Now you have finished creating a NTFS partition in your hard disk drive. If you encounter any issues while following this tutorial do let me know via comments.
