About the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tet)

The Vietnamese Lunar New Year, also called Tet Nguyen Dan, or Tet for short, is one of the biggest and most popular festivals of the year in Vietnam. The celebration is a time for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as to welcome in a new year with family.

The festival is one of the longest celebrated holidays, lasting up to seven days, and this year is the Year of the Monkey. According to Vietnam Online, people born in a year of the Monkey are believed to be smart, creative and possess a dynamic personality while being a little mischievous. Monkey people are born to be inquisitive and curious.

Tet Traditions

According to Vietnam Online, Tet plays an important role in Vietnamese’s religious beliefs, so preparations begin well in advance of the upcoming new year. To get rid of the bad luck from the old year, people will spend a few days cleaning the home. People also try to pay all their pending debts and resolve any arguments before the new year begins.

Tet is not a one-day holiday, but rather several days of celebration. According to Vietnam Online, here are some common celebrations for Tet in Vietnam:

• Fireworks: Every year a firework display occurs to ring in the new year. The displays are usually organized in big cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue or Da Nang, in order to provide the best view and serve the largest number of viewers.

• Family parties: Family members unite together to enjoy and share all the sadness, happiness and experiences gained over the past year. It’s also a time to review family traditions, show respect to elders and strengthen relationships between members.

• Lucky money for children and elders: Children and elders receive a small amount of money in red envelopes that can bring good fortune in the upcoming year. This custom helps educate children on the value of money and how to save money for good purposes. The red envelopes help represent secrecy and privacy to avoid comparison between monetary amounts. Adults want children to regard the money as a gift of the new year, instead of being jealous of receiving less than other children.

• Visiting pagoda: People visit pagodas and temples to pray for a happy new year full of wishes they hope to come true. It’s also a chance for Vietnamese to show respect and appreciation for the Gods who have been protecting and granting their wishes.
