The talks about increased utilization of Mobility within the Enterprise and its repeated discussion might seem a bit boring but the technological, economic and security challenges that it brings up makes it too critical to be given a thought repeatedly. Traditional enterprise IT departments are based on planning and predictable policies but with the growth of mobile apps and introduction of third party mobile solutions ( read public apps) within the enterprise sphere there is a trend of building solutions based on what the employees demand not something which was planned by the IT dept at the first place. These solutions may have the required functionality but they sometimes fall short of the security and ability to integrate with the existing IT infrastructure. This is something which the IT department is not used to and hence the challenges.

Another problem faced by the enterprise IT is that devices are now brought to the IT network by employees (BYOD) not the ones mandated by the IT department. This is a huge problem since it brings in a whole new set of accessibility issues, security challenges, privacy and device management issues. These need to be confronted and dealt with positively so that mobility could be used to its full functionality.

Firstly, the IT managers need to talk to the different department heads and discuss what their employees want. Once they know what is required, they can then match that to the business processes and build mobile solutions proactively by using the enterprise IT security standards and mobility frameworks.

Secondly, the mobility frameworks and security policies should be slightly fluid. This is required since different target audience within the enterprise might have different responsibilities, different levels of access and responsibilities. Hence one size fits all policies especially in the case of mobility solutions are not the best way to go forward. Finally the enterprise IT needs to make sure they have in place the right technology infrastructure and security assessment procedures to ensure flawless delivery and maintenance of mobility solutions within the enterprise.
