Migrating to a new mobility platform

Most of the enterprise Mobility endeavors involve designing and building a new mobile application addressing a unique business process. Once the mobility application is built, deployed and tested, it makes a business process much easier and benefits the employees, customers and the organization using the application. But not all mobility projects fall in the above category. Certain projects require maintenance, improvement or migration to a new mobility platform hence ensuring that the business process app continues to deliver efficiently.

Companies which were early adapters of the enterprise mobility solutions tend to invest in improving their mobility platforms and readying them for latest technology advances. Mobility applications which were built long back may reach towards the end of their life due to many reasons. Few reasons include lack of available support, increased user expectations and drastic change in the devices and operating systems in the mobility landscape.

Once the enterprise IT team has identified a legacy application to be moved to a new mobility platform, it’s important that due diligence is conducted to avert future risks with the new proposed solution. Make sure that all the documentation related to the older solution including processes, technology stack, dependent devices and integration requirements are thoroughly investigated. Once that is done, it’ll be great to communicate with the leadership and the end users to understand the requirement of the solution and its usefulness.

Finally it’s time to start comparing possible alternatives available in the market. Shortlisting the best devices from the market and then evaluating them for a comparative pros and cons analysis should be the way ahead. Device compatibility with existing applications and peripherals like printers etc. should not be overlooked. Once the new platform/device is finalized, the enterprise IT team can go ahead with the design, build and test cycle.

It is also vital to understand that this entire process need be documented properly and decisions be taken keeping the future of mobile technology in mind. It is a fast evolving space and the solution being designed should be sustainable enough to meet the demands of the end users, business process and flexible enough to inculcate future modifications without incurring huge investment.
