Is a Win Against Real Betis a Turning Point for Beale’s Rangers?

Beale’s team should be given credit for making the perfect start to their Europa League group stage campaign. Even without being able to convert possession into goals, Beale deserves recognition for setting off in an impressive manner.

Opposing a well-seasoned side containing amazing technical players such as Abde Ezzalzouli and Isco, they showed resilience against any clashes that erupted at times.

Lee McCulloch: It could be a turning point for Beale’s Rangers

Rangers manager Michael Beale had endured an unfavorable start to the season and was facing intense criticism from fans and media ahead of Real Betis’ visit in the Europa League. A 4-0 loss against PSV Eindhoven in Champions League action and Ibrox defeat against Celtic added to this pressure.

Former Ibrox captain Lee McCulloch believes Beale’s Rangers side could find strength from this win, speaking on BBC Scotland and saying so:

The Light Blues may not have been at their best against Spanish visitors, but they still managed to come away with a 1-0 win against Abdallah Sima’s second-half strike enough for victory in a tight match where both teams vied for progression in Group E. Now the momentum should be maintained when Motherwell come calling this weekend and Livingston come midweek for a Viaplay Cup quarter-final that could bring them one step closer to Hampden Stadium.

Beale’s best result as a manager

Beale’s loud-and-clear style may take some getting used to in Glasgow’s unforgiving goldfish bowl, but his knowledge that he can lead his team on to victory is invaluable for a club looking to rebuild their squad and generate revenue by participating in European competition – results which could allow them to challenge for league supremacy next season.

Last night’s victory against Betis provided some relief for Beale and his players. It was an improved team performance compared to defeats against St Johnstone, St Mirren and Livingston, highlighted by a Sakala goal that added shine. What was most encouraging however, was Beale’s side showing resilience after falling behind against Betis; something which will excite fans when playing Celtic on Saturday; something Beale enjoyed doing while serving under Gerrard as first-team coach from 2018-2021.

Rabbi Matondo is a real threat

Matondo got his chance to shine for Rangers when he came off the bench during their 4-0 Premiership rout of Livingston at Ibrox last weekend. Although Wales winger Tom Lawrence has played more senior games for Wales than Rangers thus far, his playing time should increase soon enough at both institutions.

Rangers had struggled against opponents who relied heavily on defensive play and unorthodox passing in this match, yet their summer signing, for PS6million, proved that he can break through and provide goals they desperately craved. Quick, direct and able to play in multiple positions.

Matondo had two key chances in the second half, only for them both to go begging. First he cut inside from his right side to latch onto an excellent pass from Marc Roca before seeing his shot fly high over the bar and miss. Later he attempted to run through a crowd but lost his balance and sent his effort wide; both opportunities showed how dangerous Matondo could be when given room, potentially being decisive factors in any game this season for the Light Blues.

Gers’ passing wasn’t good enough

After hearing of Brad Lyons’ early goal at Kilmarnock and their Champions League exit against PSV Eindhoven, Ibrox stood hushed as anticipation grew for Thursday’s big match against Real Betis. Victory could help ease early disappointment and provide further proof that Beale’s signings are improving the club.

At times it was an exhausting and dispiriting contest as neither team managed to convert its dominance. Following several missed opportunities from Beale’s side after halftime, Sima struck and proved decisive.

The Gers haven’t lost at Ibrox since its rebrand in the Europa League since its return, and are joint leaders of their section with Sparta Prague who defeated Aris Limassol. Beale’s side have the potential to become future managers; this result will give them confidence as they face bigger challenges ahead. They also will gain knowledge on how best to control a game against well-drilled opposition.
