Introduction

In a country like India where even the autumn months make you break into a sweat, escaping to the alpine regions of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh is an appealing idea. On top of that, if you add the thrill and excitement of traversing the terrains on a bike then you are in for a perfect adventure in the mountains. The Manali to Leh Bike Trip covers a distance of more than  450 kilometers over a span of 11 days and takes you through some of the highest mountain passes in the world. The transition from verdant meadows to beige sand dunes to azure lakes and snow-white peaks is a treat for the sore eyes and the perfect addition to your travel diaries.

The Biking Season

If you have prior experience of riding a bike, you must be aware that there are certain conditions conducive to a smooth and comfortable ride, few of them being favorable weather and road conditions. During the summer months of April to May, the snow doesn’t melt and hence the trails are not clearly visible making it difficult to navigate. The monsoon months are not suitable  because of the landslides and slippery roads which can cause accidents. As far as the winter months are concerned, passes like the Khardung La Pass and Chang La Pass are blocked because of heavy snowfall. Most of the areas are inaccessible and the frigid temperatures are too extreme for some people to endure. Thus, the best time to travel from Manali to Leh would be the autumn months of September and October when the sky is mostly clear, the water levels are normal and the snowline has receded. You will be blessed with breathtaking views as well during this season and can enjoy it to the fullest.
