PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan Is Retiring In 2024

Sony has declared that Jim Ryan, the CEO of PlayStation, is stepping down from his position and will retire in March 2024. Hiroki Totoki will assume the role of Sony Interactive Entertainment Chairman in October 2023 and will then become the company’s interim CEO on April 1, when Ryan officially retires.

“After three decades, I have made the decision to retire from SIE in March 2024. I have enjoyed having a job I love in a very unique company, collaborating with exceptional individuals and incredible partners,” said Ryan in a statement.

Totoki expressed his gratitude to Jim Ryan for his remarkable accomplishments and contributions throughout his 30-year career at Sony, including the tremendous success of launching the PlayStation 5.

Ryan has recently gained attention for his involvement in attempting to thwart Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Specifically, he argued that the potential exclusivity of Call of Duty to Microsoft would be harmful to the gaming community and that the acquisition as a whole would be anti-competitive.

Ryan also supervised the release of the PS5 during Sony’s most dominant years in the video game industry with the enormously successful PS4. Furthermore, after facing backlash from fans, he reversed the decision to shut down the digital storefronts for PS3 and PS Vita, and he encouraged Sony to embark on a new initiative with more games as service titles. Ryan played a significant role in Sony’s acquisition of prominent studios like Insomniac Games, Bungie, and Housemarque.
