Son Heung-min scored twice as Tottenham came from behind and then survived a late scare to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Harry Kane also scored to help Tottenham move atop Group D, one point clear of both Marseille and Sporting Lisbon, with two rounds remaining.

But the England captain’s penalty miss in stoppage time added to a frantic finale.

“We could have scored many, many goals,” manager Antonio Conte said. “Instead, until the end we suffer. For sure, we have to try to learn about this situation and understand the game is never ended.

“But an important win for us. We started in a difficult way but a good reaction, we scored three goals, we had many chances to improve — good saves from their goalkeeper — and in the end we’re leading our group.”

Victory against Sporting in Tottenham’s next match will secure qualification to the round of 16.

Frankfurt took a 14th-minute lead after poor defending from Eric Dier saw the England international mis-control in his own box. Jesper Lindstrom pounced to steal possession and Daichi Kamada put the ball into an empty net.

Son equalized for the home team six minutes later — slotting in after Kane’s decisive pass.

Then it was Kane’s turn to get on the score sheet after being fouled by Kristijan Jakic in the box. He duly converted in the 28th minute — scoring his 21st goal in 28 Champions League appearances.

Spurs looked to have the game sealed nine minutes before halftime when Son struck his second.

The South Korean lashed an unstoppable first-time volley into the roof of the net after being picked out by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

He might have recorded a hat trick before the break but was denied by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp twice.

The German team’s hopes looked even bleaker just before the hour mark when it was reduced to 10 men. Tuta was sent off for two yellow card offences in three minutes for fouls on Son.

But if the home crowd expected the Spurs to extend its lead, it didn’t happen.

Instead, Faride Alidou headed home Mario Gotze’s 87th-minute corner to set up a nervy finish before Kane fired a stoppage-time penalty over the bar, which would have provided a more comfortable margin of victory.

Marseille continues revival with win v 9-man Sporting

Two wins in two matches have given a much-needed boost to Marseille’s chances of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

Marseille eased to a 2-0 victory at Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday after the Portuguese side had two players sent off.

Sporting also had a player sent off in last week’s 4-1 loss to Marseille.

Marseille was bottom after two straight defeats but has now moved second, above Sporting on head-to-head record and a point behind Group D leader Tottenham after the English side beat Frankfurt 3-2.

It all went wrong for Sporting in the 19th when defender Ricardo Esgaio was sent off following two yellow cards in three minutes.

Esgaio’s second yellow card also saw him concede a penalty for a foul on Amine Harit. Mattéo Guendouzi had never taken a penalty before but he sent the ball in off the post to give Marseille the lead.

That was the first time Marseille had opened the scoring in a Champions League match since 2013.

Harit was also involved in Marseille’s second goal, 10 minutes later, with a cross for Alexis Sánchez to tap in. The goal was given after a VAR check for a possible offside in the buildup.

Matters went from bad to worse for Sporting in the 61st when midfielder Pedro Gonçalves was shown two yellow cards in a matter of seconds and also sent off. The first booking was for a late challenge and the second was for something he said to the referee.

Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen loses 3-0 to Porto

Xabi Alonso’s debut as a Champions League coach didn’t go as planned.

Two goals for Mehdi Taremi from the penalty spot and superb goalkeeping from Diogo Costa lifted Porto to a 3-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, strengthening the Portuguese team’s bid to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage and leaving Leverkusen last in Group B.

A Champions League winner as a player with Liverpool and Real Madrid, Alonso took over as Leverkusen coach last week, after Gerardo Seoane was fired following a 2-0 loss to Porto away. It’s the first time that Alonso has been a first-team head coach after stints with youth and reserve teams in Spain.

Costa found Galeno with a searching long-range kick into the Leverkusen half in the sixth minute, and the forward cut inside from the left flank and scored as two Leverkusen defenders collided while trying to stop him.

In the first of many contentious calls, referee István Kovács booked Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker for diving soon after but then had to reverse the decision and give a penalty after a video review showed the Dutch left-back had been tripped. Costa, who saved a Leverkusen penalty last week, did well again as he stopped Kerem Demirbay’s spot kick to preserve Porto’s lead.

Leverkusen’s frustration grew as Amine Adli seemed to have levelled the score in the 35th minute, only for a video review to show his offside teammate Patrik Schick was blocking Costa’s view.

Galeno won two second-half penalties to help Porto extend its lead, first for contact with Adli and then for a clumsy challenge by Odilon Kossounou. Both times, Iran forward Taremi stepped up to beat Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky from the penalty spot.

Even as it dominated the scoreline, Porto allowed Leverkusen plenty of chances in defence, but a mix of Costa’s goalkeeping and poor decision-making by Leverkusen in the penalty area stopped the German team from scoring.

In the other game in Group B, Club Brugge drew 0-0 at Atlético Madrid to secure qualification for the last 16.
