The monday.com-Slack Integration: All You Need to Know

Clear channels of communication are crucial for optimising your teams’ performance. The monday.com– Slack integration delivers just that.

Effective teamwork requires seamless collaboration and work management. This becomes even more important when you factor in today’s predominantly remote or hybrid working environments. But finding the right technologies to enable this can be difficult.

As you may well have experienced yourself, few platforms provide a perfect solution. We recommend using different tools that each have their own specialisation (in this case, communication and work management) and then customising them to work for you.

monday.com and Slack are two such tools. And, today, we’re going to explain how you can integrate them to provide a cohesive communication and work management solution for your team.

We’ll cover:

An introduction to monday.com and Slack

It’s likely you’re already familiar with at least one of these tools, as monday.com and Slack are two of the most widely-used tools for project management and communication respectively.

But if you’re new to them (or simply need a quick refresher course), here’s brief overview of each and what they can offer you:

What is monday.com?

If you want to plan and manage workflows, meet deadlines, and establish accountability and user responsibilities, monday.com is the ideal tool for your team.

This project management OS offers feature-rich capabilities for planning work, managing and delivering projects, and subsequent reporting. It also allows some real-time collaboration if you use the item discussion panel. In practice, however, it’s not what we would term instant, and it doesn’t provide user-to-user communication.

What is Slack?

Now unlike monday.com, Slack does provide user-to-user communication. It’s a collaboration platform designed for businesses, enabling users to send instant messages and make calls.

With Slack you can create various channels, send documents, post audio files and join huddles. Perhaps most importantly for a connected team and processes, Slack integrates with other apps and tools, such as Atlassian’s Jira and Confluence.

Why integrate monday.com and Slack?

Whilst intended for use in workplaces, Slack is not a work management tool. It was purpose-built for communication and, put simply, that’s what it does best. monday.com on the other hand, was specifically designed for workflow management. As a result, its communication options are limited.

Now, if you’re a business that needs specialised project management and communication platforms, you would have to use both monday.com and Slack for maximum efficiency. They’re both leaders in their fields – but the downside is that your team would then have to work across two different platforms.

Integration is the answer.

With the monday.com-Slack integration, two specialised tools work together to provide one powerful solution.

monday.com - Slack integration: Key features

  • Instantly create new items, such as tasks or projects, directly from Slack conversations using the ‘Create an item’ action

  • Add updates to existing items from Slack

  • Perform an action in monday.com (creating a new task or changing a status, for example), and notify an entire #channel in Slack instantly so all stakeholders are on the same page

  • When due dates are updated in monday.com, team(s) are immediately notified in the relevant Slack channel

  • Conversations across both platforms are automatically synced

monday.com - Slack integration: Key benefits

  • All teammates are aware of deadlines and due dates

  • Reduces context switching and duplication of effort

  • Conversations, documents, links and files can be securely and centrally shared

  • Work and collaboration is easier and more efficient

How does monday.com integrate with Slack?

  1. To begin, go to the monday.com board you wish to connect with Slack and click the ‘integration’ button. You’ll see a list of built-in, free, integration-ready apps (of which Slack is one).

  2. Select the Slack banner to see a list of Automation recipes available through the integration. Recipes provide supported automations or customisable templates consisting of a Trigger, Conditions and Actions.

  3. Select a recipe. monday.com will then ask you to connect to a Slack account. Simply follow the instructions to authorise the connection.

  4. Now that your two platforms are connected, you can start benefitting from your monday.com – Slack integration. Or, if you’re using a customisable recipe, you can continue to customise how you want to use your connection.

Customisation examples

To really get the most out of your monday.com – Slack integration, you can customise some elements.

  • Do you want to notify a channel on Slack when an item is created on monday.com? Simply select that recipe and choose the event and board on monday.com, alongside the Slack channel you wish to alert.

  • Would you like an individual user to be notified every time a certain event occurs? Fill in the item and event along with the name of the user, and they’ll get a message on Slack when the event occurs.

  • Looking to send updates and create tasks from Slack? Just head over to the shortcuts icon and click on ‘Browse all shortcuts’. Find and select monday.com to ‘Create a new item’.
You can then fill in the details of the item, including any messages that you wish to include in the item’s ‘Update’ section.
