There is a Dvla live Chat, which can be used to both talk to a human advisor or interact with an automated chatbot. You’ll need to start a live chat between 8 AM and 7 PM, Monday to Friday, or between 8 AM and 2 PM on a Saturday, to speak to a trained advisor, or you’ll be interacting with the automated service, which can’t provide specific information. It’s also worth us mentioning that you can’t use the DVLA live chat to make a payment or order a new license.

How to Start a DVLA Live Chat

With that in mind, starting a DVLA live chat couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is head over to the Webchat on the official DVLA website (always ensure the URL has .gov.uk when looking for governmental resources, to make sure your’e in the right place) and click ‘Start Chat. You’ll then be asked to enter your first name, last name, and email address, before you’re put in the queue to be transferred to an advisor — or click the button below to jump there.

Of course, be prepared to wait a while. Just like all government Support services, demand far exceeds the amount of support staff available. You can be waiting for someone to join the chatroom for as long as an hour in some cases. So if you’ve been waiting for a while and you still haven’t had someone reach out, just know that’s not totally out of the ordinary. Consider starting the chat around 11 am or 3 pm, when most people are at work, for the shortest wait times. 

Other Ways To Contact the DVLA

The DVLA’s support service of course doesn’t stop with its live chat. The department offers phone support Monday through Friday, from 8 AM until 7 PM, and from 8 AM until 2 PM on a Saturday, at 0300 790 6801 — the same hours as the DVLA live chat. You may also be directed here if there are no advisors available when you attempt to start a webchat. You’ll need to telephone to make a payment or order a new license, or use the self-serve checkouts and resources in the Driving Licenses section of the GOV.UK website.
