Last month, I gave you a special preview of Beat Bugs, a new kids’ show that hit Netflix on August 3rd. Beat Bugs is a new cartoon inspired by the music of The Beatles, following the adventures of anthropomorphic bugs Walter, Jay, Crick, Kumi, and Buzz – just call them the “Fab Five”!

The show features new interpretations of Beatles classics from artists such as P!nk, Sia, Eddie Vedder, and Jennifer Hudson. In the clip above, creator Josh Wakely discusses his memories of hearing The Beatles as a child and imagining worlds based on their songs, and I had much the same experience when I was growing up. I remember listening to Revolver for the first time when I was about 5 or 6, and soon after that, thinking that the White Album was all about food. I also thought that the line, “Got to be good looking ’cause he’s so hard to see” in “Come Together” meant that the man had invisibility powers in front of anyone that was not especially good looking!

Around the same age, I had a set of rubber toy figures – a farmer and three smiling animals – and I decided to make them “The Beatles”. I distinctly remember taking a sticker of an eyeball and sticking it on the back of the lamb’s head (He was supposed to be John) so that he could be the “Fool on The Hill”. For some reason, “The eyes in his head see the world going round” made me think that he had eyes in the back of his head. Later, I got a Playmobil meter maid figure who naturally became Lovely Rita!

Sharing The Beatles With The Next Generation

The music of The Beatles is captivating to all ages, and its creativity and playful elements lend themselves well to the imaginative minds of children. In honor of Beat Bugs passing this music down to the next generation, we held our own jam session – and this talented little star created her own one-woman-band!
