10 Do’s and Don’ts for Wedding Dressing!

Engulfed in tradition and fervour, Indian weddings can be an anomaly fashion wise. Being a guest can sometimes be much harder than being the bride and groom, as they have all the help in the world to decide what they should be wearing. But don’t worry, we wont leave you astray! Here is a short but succinct guide for Wedding Dressing!

1. Say no to heels

Pencil heels are devils in disguise. They start by looking so glamorous and nice at the beginning of the night, but are quite the nightmares by the end of it. Skip the pencil heels and instead opt for wedges or kitten heels, which will give you the height yet keep you comfortable. Here’s to dancing away the whole night while looking amazing.

2. Don’t wear black:

While quite the stunning colour, black is considered inauspicious in the Indian culture. This is mainly because of the gloominess it represents. So why not stay away from the colour to avoid the mean looks from the fellow partygoers. Instead choose bright colours to fit the occasion and add the happiness around you. You can always incorporate black in your outfit but don’t go all black!

3. Minimalism is key

Standing out isn’t always a good thing, but it is also not something that requires ostentatious attires. You can always stand out by doing the least and giving the well jewelled a run for their money. Stick to a silk sari with a basic gold embroidery and a mang tika (think Aisha movie’s final scene), or a skirt with a nice choli, not lehnga like but more ethnic and intricate.

4. Do the extraordinary

Wedding season means being photograph and trend ready at all times. Wedding Dressing is more than just a suit, sari or a lehnga. With the fashion innovations happening every moment, you need to exploit them. Wear a straight pant trouser with a choli or flower brocade skirt with a long minimal white kurta. Get a hold of your neighbourhood tailor and inspire him to create what everyone else will copy.

5. Talk to your friends

This one tip helps in two ways. Knowing what your friends are wearing will keep you guys from showing up in the same outfit, at the same time you will have an idea of what the wedding dressing theme might be. This will help you make a sound call.

6. Spare the skin

We have nothing against skin show, we believe in the ‘if you got it, flaunt it’ strategy. But rebelling at a traditional Indian wedding would not be the best idea. Where as belly and back show is basic to all Indian wedding attires, but also keep clear of too much cleavage show. Basically, judge where you are going. A temple wedding calls for traditional whereas if you have some freaky friends who are throwing their reception at a club, wear whatever you like! Know your audience.

7. Skip the anarkali

If there is one trend that has been used and abused in wedding dressing, it is the anarkali. The over-worn style can be attributed to Aishwarya Rai’s consistent appearance in them, but you need to break the trend. Please avoid them and instead try an ankle-length embellished gown or a straight leg heavy trouser suit if you want to stick to traditional.

8. Accessorise right

When we say accessorise, we want you to think beyond the gold/silver bedazzled clutch. Let’s do something that your best friend won’t be doing. Get an earthy, leather cross-body bag to complement your gorgeous banarasi juttis. Why not opt for soft gold or beaded artificial jewellery over the heavy gold one? Oh, and a headband? There is so much to be done only if you expand your horizons!

9. Repeating is not a sin

Wedding seasons can be expensive if you keep innovation at bay. You don’t have to buy a new outfit for every wedding function, in fact this is your chance to play with the trends! Ear the same sari with different blouses, or the same outfit with earth shatteringly different accessories. It is what you make of it, without emptying your bank accounts.

10. Play with colours

Pink, red, gold can mesmerise but even bore. The go to options are safe use, but not awe-inspiring. Choose colours that are out of the ordinary, fun and not usual. Probably a white outfit with a rainbow dupatta?
