The Dance, Music and Band Baja of Sindhi Weddings

Every Wedding is a celebration of love and affection. Sindhi weddings are known for its grandeur, exquisiteness and the whole band baja. Their unique rituals are overwhelmingly beautiful.

Pre-wedding rituals

1. Kachchi Mishri & Pakki Mishri

This function is the initial step towards a marriage among Sindhis. Here, the groom’s sister would cover herself and the bride in a red shawl and give the bride sweets. She would also put a coconut and 5 types of fruits in her lap as part of this ritual. The engagement ceremony also takes place during this ritual.

2. Curry Chawal

Curry Chawal is the ritual where the groom’s family make rice, tuk, phulkas, subzi and sweet and serve it to 9 Brahmins. After the ‘Annadan’, the groom’s sister serves sherbet and lunch to the bride and gives her loads of gifts.

3. Mehndi & Sangeet

Mehndi and Sangeet are the major attraction of a Sindhi wedding. While the bride and groom would be adorned in Mehndi, the rest of the family would indulge in dance, music and masti.

Wedding Rituals

4. Vanva

This custom takes place in the morning of the wedding day at the wedding venue. Here, seven married women would help the bride in grinding wheat in a traditional grinder called ‘jandd’. After Vanva the bride gets ready for the big day.

5. Barat

Sindhis believe in band baja when  it comes to their Barat. The groom and his family & friends proceed to the wedding venue by dancing and singing to the grand band music.

6. Swagat

The bride’s mother welcomes the Barat with an Arti. Before entering the venue the groom will be made to break an earthen pot. The bride’s brother accompanies the groom to the Mandap for the rituals.

7. Jaimala & Hathialo

During Jaimala the couple exchange garlands and the priest begin the wedding Puja. After the Puja, the priest would tie the groom’s shawl and bride’s saree for the Phera.

8. Kanyadan & Phera

This is the main part of the wedding where the bride’s father gives the hands of his daughter in the groom’s hand and tie it with a red scarf. The couple then takes seven rounds against the holy fire by promising each other love, care and support.
