The Foreigner’s Perfect Guide to Attend Indian Weddings

With pompous granduer, blaring music, vibrant colours and a generous air of merriment, Indian Weddings are anything boring! Culturally rich and immersed with tradition, the Indian Wedding is about celebration in all forms, from food to clothes. Our first advise to you would be to ABSORB and enjoy every single moment of the crazy festivities.

Firstly, accept that you will stick out from the crowd, and all the aunties will invite you home for dinner. Some might even promise their daughter’s or son’s hand in marriage (lucky you!). Also, generally us Indians are all about the love, so expect tonnes of hugs and kisses.

1. Mark your calendar-

Indian weddings are nothing short of 3 days (gear up!). So, if you need to take leave, consider asking for at least a week off. Plan your trip in such a manner, that you get to travel to other parts of India after the wedding. Ask your hosts for some suggestions depending on your location.

2. Get your vaccines, visas and tickets booked-

Once the couple has sent you the invite, don’t waste time and start planning your trip to India. Most likely you’re going to need a shot or two (the medical kind) and a visa. Figure out the deets and ask the couple well in advance for any invitation letters you need.

3. Gear up-

Ok, that LBD or black suit will just not make the cut. Try blend into the festivities and have fun trying on a saree or sherwani (for men). With the Indian diaspora reaching till Timbuktu, we’re sure you won’t have a problem finding an Indian clothes shop close to where you live. Or add an extra day to your trip and do some shopping in India before the wedding. And don’t be surprised if your see our Indian families change their outfits more times than Beyonce’s costume changes! Tip: Don’t wear white, black or red. Try fuchsia pink for a change!

4. Bindis and bling-

We love our gold! So, leave your Tiffany’s at home and indulge in some high-voltage accessories. Plus, this is the best time to try on that bindi.

5. Namaste, smile and nod-

With the mini-fan following you might attract, remember the easiest thing to do is say namaste, show your mega-watt smile and nod. Especially if you’re having a babel-moment. Or be inquisitive and try learn a few basic phrases.

6. Don’t kiss the bride and her friends-

Remember that our traditions are different from yours. So while you might be glue-close to the bride in NY, in Delhi you might risk the chance of getting beaten up!

7. Leave the watch-

Indian weddings tend to have odd timings, so make sure you’ve had your daily cuppa and try stay awake for the whole ceremony.

8. All-day buffets-

We can guarantee you won’t go hungry at Indian weddings. Most of the events and ceremonies have food aplenty- some might even look like food-eating competitions! Be adventurous and try out the dishes, but remember to eat smart (don’t hog) and carry Imodium with you.

9. Be proactive-

Indian weddings are all like a family-run business. You’ll note that each member has a designated position from making sure the guests are seated to running the car-o-bar (find out for yourself). So be helpful and help around. The couple will really appreciate it.
