The mega Indian celebration that is Holi is just around the corner and while we are all gearing up to give in to the child in us this festive season, let’s not forget to stay safe and healthy. Holi or what is formally known as Basant Utsav has been celebrated since time immemorial in this India and even parts of the world with an Indian or Hindu population. This popular festival was originally observed with the practice of smearing vegetable dyes and natural colors on friends, family and neighbors however with the advent of mass produced chemical colors, it’s not entirely unheard of to know of people having rashes and allergic reactions to Holi colors. While we all want to participate in this joyous festival, it is possible to play it safe. Furthermore dressing right during Holi can help avoid other common issues. Read further to know more.

Skin and Hair Care

Holi colors can often have a damaging effect on skin and Hair and the results are generally seen post the celebrations. If one can help it, it’s best to stick to playing with vegetables dyes and natural colors only. Any which way, certain preventive measures can be taken to avoid skin and hair damage. The primary and most effective way to stay safe from rashes and allergies brought on by colors and dyes this Holi is to use hair oil and sun screen as a buffer against colors. Well-oiled hair is more likely to effectively take on the onslaught of chemical colors. Sunscreen is a good buffer for your skin.

Dress Right This Holi

Cotton outfits like kurtis for girls and kurtas for men are the best and most traditional way to dress for the festivities. Opt for a light colored outfit as it brings out the various colors you are bound to be smeared with. If ethnic wear is not possible, jeans and a T-shirts work just fine. Girls can opt for a tie and dye cotton dupatta to drape with jeans and tees; it’s not entirely uncommon to see men tie a bandhini around the waist with kurta pyjama for added ethnic charm. Women are advised to avoid sheer or semi-transparent fabrics to avoid unnecessary attention. Provided you dress right and stay safe, nothing can stop you from having a joyous Holi.
