Cajamar are the latest Spanish bank to introduce current Account charges for those not getting a salary or pension paid into their account, leaving very few fee free, no strings attached accounts.
I had opened a cajamar Current Account around 18 months ago as I was sick of getting charges on my supposedly commission free Santander account. All was fine with Cajamar until they introduced a 20 euro yearly card maintenance fee around 6 months ago. I then received a letter at the beginning of this month saying that unless I paid in my salary or a pension each month, I would be charged 9 euros per quarter. I barely use this account - I only have one direct debit on this account and keep no more than 1000 euros in it to be on the safe side.

So I called in to my local branch yesterday and closed the account and popped in to the bank a couple of doors down to open a new current account which has zero charges and no requirements to pay in a minimum monthly amount. More on this in another blog post.
