4 Ways To Celebrate Christmas On A Budget

Tags: christmas gift

Christmas is all about cheer and celebrating it with the ones you love. It usually brings to mind festive decorations, dinners with family, and making sure that you’ve got a Gift for everyone – and it can all very quickly add up.

But there are plenty of ways to spread Christmas cheer without breaking the bank. Here are some ideas for you and your loved ones on how to have Christmas on a budget.

Make A Christmas Budget – And Stick To It

Making a budget might seem like the least Christmas-y thing ever, but to have Christmas on a budget, well, you have to have a budget. One reason why spending seems to go overboard during Christmas time is that in the flurry of celebrations, we often forget little things and end up buying these at the last minute. It might not seem like a lot at first, but it adds up rather quickly!

Here are some common Christmas expenses, and how you can keep them on a budget:

Christmas Cards

Cards may not seem to be too much of an expense, but if you like to give lots of them out, they can really add up – just think of all the people you give cards to, and the cost of a single card! One way to cut down on card costs is simply to give out e-cards instead of physical cards.

You can easily put together a Christmas card using Photoshop or any similar photo editing software. Make it personal by including a fun family photo, or make it sentimental by restoring an old photo of your grandparents and great-grandparents for your relatives!

But if you still want to go the old-school route and send out actual cards, you can save a lot by printing your own. If you have a reliable printer, simply stock up on some good paper and print at home. Otherwise, look for a local printer who can do bulk printing at a cheaper cost!

Christmas Gifts

Gift-giving has been at the center of Christmas celebrations since time immemorial, and is often the most exciting part of the celebration, especially for children. But if Christmas cards add up quickly, so do Christmas gifts – and at an exponential rate!

The thought of gifts can be overwhelming, so the first step would be to take a deep breath, then sit down and list down your immediate family and closest friends. While so-called Christmas sales will tempt you to buy in bulk so that you can give gifts to everyone, it’s much better to limit your list so you can give much more meaningful gifts.

For the craftier ones out there, an obvious choice would be to DIY gifts for your loved ones! This might take a bit of planning and time, depending on the craft and gift. For children, you might want to spark their creativity by putting together a craft kit for them – just gather the materials they’ll need and you can set a crafting date with them!

It might be a bit harder to think of parent gift ideas for Christmas, but don’t worry – your parents are sure to love any gift that you clearly put a lot of thought into! Think of activities that you did a lot together as a family, and start there! It doesn’t have to be fancy – it can be a lovely framed family photo or a dinner date at their favorite restaurant.

Christmas Decorations

Your house doesn’t need to be overflowing with Christmas decorations to evoke Christmas cheer – you just have to be smart and strategic about decorating! If you want to be really frugal, you can even do it for free with a bit of creativity – decorate with repurposed items, foraged greenery, and unwanted items lying around.

If you do have some cash to spare, be purposeful with what you buy for decor. Look for decorations that can be used for different occasions, such as fairy lights and paper lampshades. Choose motifs that are not strictly Christmas-y, instead of candy canes and Santa hats, choose stars or flowers.

Christmas Lunch And Dinner

Christmas might bring to mind extravagant meals, whether it’s lunch with family or dinner with friends. If you usually go out for Christmas lunch or dinner, you might want to try staying in this year and cooking your own meals! There are plenty of recipes for delicious dishes out there that make use of budget-friendly ingredients!

For bigger families and gatherings, suggest having a potluck, where each person or family brings in a dish to share! You won’t need to slave in the kitchen cooking all day for such a large group, and it will be a great way for each one to show off their cooking prowess – plus, you can save plenty while making sure everyone has something to eat!

For dessert, kids and kids at heart will definitely enjoy cookie decorating – bake a simple batch of cookies or even get plain, budget-friendly ones from the store, then have them decorate to their heart’s desire! Provide icing, sprinkles, candies, and other cookie decors, and once cookies have been decorated, you can exchange cookies with each other! This is an idea that can also lessen the need to bring gifts for every single person – give them a personalized cookie instead!

Make Christmas Meaningful Without Breaking The Bank

Christmas doesn’t need to come with a huge price tag to be meaningful. After all, Christmas is all about celebrating with your loved ones. Always bear this in mind when doing your Christmas planning, and don’t stress too much about expenses – there are plenty of ways to cut back on holiday spending without losing its spark. Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas on how you can do so. Happy holidays
