Travel Guide – Things To Do In Morocco With Kids

Morocco is a country rich in history and culture while being a truly wonderful assault on the senses. 

While not the first country to spring to mind when you think about family-friendly destinations, you’ll be surprised to learn that not only is Morocco a great idea for a family vacation, but one which could bring teach your Children a huge amount in terms of history. 

If you’re considering Morocco for your next family break, it’s important to base yourself in a spot close to the main sights you want to see. Most families choose to base themselves in Marrakech, but there are other cities you could consider, such as Rabat and Casablanca. 

To whet your appetite, let’s look at some fantastic family-friendly activities you might like to try for yourselves. 

Marrakech Souk Tours
A souk is a large, colorful and very entertaining marketplace and most large cities have them. However, Marrakech is certainly one of the largest. An organized souk tour is a great idea because that way you won’t get lost and you’ll learn far more as you go along. Kids will love the colors, the noise, and the scents in the air and you can purchase all manner of souvenirs. Of course, you can also try the delicious street food along the way.

Visit The Atlas Mountains
This is another sight that is best done by an organized tour, so find the ideal excursion for you and head off into the stunningly beautiful Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you’ll get a chance to see and ride the camels, check out natural argan oil stalls, and you can usually try a traditional Berber meal as part of your trip. Of course, the views are also stunning!

Head to The Sahara Sand Dunes
The kids will be super-excited for a day out in the desert and the huge orange sand dunes will beckon you! There are many organised tours that head out into the Sahara, and again, make sure you find a good quality excursion. Most excursions also give you a chance to ride a camel through the desert – a must do!

Visit Essaouira 
You might think that a small Moroccan town might not be the most exciting area for a child but the fact that there are no cars in the centre of the town means your children and walk around freely and you’ll be more relaxed as a result! There is a beautiful Beach here, and more camel rides too! The street food is delicious and the whole town has a much more relaxed feel which is ideal for families. 

Jamaa el Fnaa – Marrakech 
This is the largest market square in Morocco and also in the whole of Africa! With countless stalls, delicious street food and fairy lights strung everywhere, it’s a real sight to see and children will love to spend their vacation cash here on various souvenirs. Do hold onto your children as you’re walking around as it can get very busy and they could easily end up lost. 

Chefchaouen
This city is known as the ‘blue city’ and you’ll see why when you arrive! Buildings are all pastel blue in various shades and it’s a stunning sight against the brightness of the sun. This is a chilled out city which is ideal for children and the Atlas Mountains in the background provide amazing photo opportunities. 

Enjoy Beach Time
Morocco has some fantastic beaches, lapped by the Atlantic Ocean. In the southwest of the country you’ll find Sidi Infi and Legzira Beach. Moulay Bouzerktoune in Essaouira is another family favorite, with a vacation vibe around you, and a short drive from Tangier you’ll find Rmilate Beach in Asilah, which is known as Paradise Beach – it’s clear why when you see it!

Morocco is a country which is packed with rich culture and sights to see. Some might not be completely suitable for young children but as the list above shows, there is plenty to keep them occupied!
