Cool Spot was a platform game from 1993, at a time in gaming where game mascots were all the rage for pushing brands, other games spring to mind are Global Gladiators (McDonalds), Push Over (Quavers), Zool (Chupa Chups), the list goes on!

Back to Cool Spot, who in this game was a brand mascot for 7UP, even though Fido Dido was considered the brands official mascot, and subsequently the 7UP brand was removed from the intro in Europe, where Cool Spot is surfing on a green 7UP bottle.

In this game, Cool Spot uses soda bubbles to kill his enemies, which include various lobsters, crabs with funny spotted boxer shorts when hit, frogs, spiders and even a racing car.

Your goal is to navigate each level, collecting enough red spots to enter the bonus level, and also freeing his spot friends from cages at the end of levels. The health of our beloved spot is represented with a spot that gradually peels away until it falls off when you run out of energy.

Cool Spot was programmed by David Perry (Earthworm Jim, Disney’s Aladdin, Global Gladiators), he began programming in 1982, at the age of just 15, cutting his teeth on the Sinclair ZX81, and went on to program many arcade conversions and gaming franchises.

The game was very well received and saw a release on most major consoles at the time and also saw a release on Commodore Amiga and MS-DOS.

My first experience with Cool Spot was on the SEGA Mega Drive, my local video rental store called Take Two, based in Wrexham, North Wales used to rent a huge selection of Mega Drive games, and Cool Spot was one of the games I rented multiple times.

Whilst it isn’t considerered a classic platformer, it’ a whole heap of fun, fast-paced action and challenging, what are your memories of Cool Spot? Let us know in the comments below.
