But running for 2 Kms is radically different than running a 10K or longer run. A long-Distance run requires a combination of physical and mental fitness. Many runners will tell you that towards the end, it is more a mind-game than a physical run. Here are some of the key things that you should keep in mind while planning for a long distance run

Training & Running Technique

While you may or may not be in good shape physically, long distance running needs strength training a Proper Running Technique more than anything else. While you are running, your calf muscles have to absorb a lot of shocks and a proper regimen of strength training helps in preventing injuries.

A 10K, 21K or a 42K run requires proper running technique as well – movement and pace. Without these, you may tire yourself out early and left with little stamina towards the end.

What to do: Ask your trainer to create a strength training regimen for your calf muscles to make them stronger. Also ask experienced runners to analyse your gait and offer you tips to improve your technique.

Get proper running shoes
Running long distances puts significant amounts of stress on the arch of your foot. Depending upon the shape of your foot and your style of running different shoes will be appropriate for you.

What to do: Ensure that you have the right running shoes that fit well and give ample support to your foot arch. Before the main event ensure that you have at least practiced for a week on the shoes you purchased. 

Find a running partner who will motivate you
Running is a lonely sport and over longer distances, motivation becomes a key issue. Towards the end, you will need to focus on your mind to motivate your body. A running partner always helps in these situations.

What to do: Get a running partner who will train with you every day and run the race with him. Running requires a fair amount of motivation and if you have a friend who is running with you it is sure to keep your spirits up during the longer runs.

 

The right clothing matters
Probably the most important thing to keep in mind while running long distances is the clothing you wear on the day.
