7 Tips for Hiring a Real Estate Agent

There are up to 2 million active real Estate agents in the United States. While that means you have plenty of options for hiring a real Estate Agent, how many of them do you want to work with?

Sure your neighbor’s sister might have a real estate license. But is she also a realtor with the National Association of Realtors? How much experience does she have in your local area? Have there been any complaints filed against her? It’s details like this that can make a big difference in your real estate experience.

You want a hard working professional in your corner who can help you with your house. Before you get started, check out our seven tips for hiring a real estate agent.

1) Interview Several Real Estate Agents

You should interview at least three realtors before hiring anyone. Ask them questions like

  • Do you work mostly with buyers or sellers?
  • How many clients are you working with right now?
  • Can I talk to some of your past references?
  • How long are your houses on the market for?

This will help you get an idea of how good your agent is.

2) Contact the Agent’s Recent Clients

If you’re selling or looking for a house, talk to your neighbors or people in the area who have recently moved. What can they tell you about their experience with the realtors you’re interviewing?

The agent needs to know your area, especially if they’re in a high demand market like a Las Vegas Realtor.

3) Look Up Their Licence in the State

When you’re choosing a real estate agent, look up their credentials with the state. Are they licensed to practice real estate in your area?

You should also look up disciplinary actions taken against them. If there are any, be sure to ask about them in your agent interview.

4) Do They Have Any Extra Credentials and Awards

Real estate can be tricky with lots of home buying drama and home loan issues. That’s why it’s always good for your real estate agent to have a lot of experience and credentials.

Ask about any awards or commendations in recent years. The more recent the award, the better.

5) Ask Your Real Estate Agent About Their Marketing Plan

One tip for how to choose a real estate agent is to ask about their marketing plan. They might mention that they already have a few clients in mind to look at your home. They might rely heavily on word-of-mouth, or even sending out postcards in town. Whatever it is, make sure they have one!

6) Talk about Communication

There’s nothing more frustrating when you’re working in real estate than an agent who never gets back to you. Ask your realtor what preferences they have for communication. If you love phone calls but they prefer text, they might not be the one for you.

7) Do You Get Along?

An agent can have all the credentials in the world, but if you don’t get along then don’t hire them. Buying and selling homes is one of the most stressful life experiences a person can have. Working with someone you like helps ease the pain.
