10 Home Improvement Hacks You Need to Know About

If you’re a homeowner, you know how satisfying it can be to embark on a DIY project to improve or beautify your living space. Or maybe you’ve just moved into a new place and are feeling overwhelmed by the possibilities — and the options!

Either way, we have some home Improvement Hacks that will help you get the most out of your house and your skills!

Some of our Hacks include ideas for freshening up your space, while others will just make any project you tackle that much easier. Read on for some ingenious tips.

1. Hack Your Hammer

If you’ve ever been at the top of a hammer, nails sticking out of your mouth (and most likely, dropping to the floor), this hack is for you. Use heavy-duty glue to affix a large round magnet to the bottom of your hammer. This will keep your nails handy, and free up your mouth for swearing when you bang your thumb by accident.

2. Paint Your Linoleum

Yep, you read that right. You don’t have to rip out that hideous, dated linoleum or vinyl flooring; you can paint right over it!

It’s not quite as easy as slapping on a coat of paint, but for less than $50 and a day or two’s worth of elbow grease, you’ll get a huge payback in the form of a beautiful and unique floor.

You will need to clean, sand, and repair (if necessary), but then it’s just a matter of choosing the right type of paint. Have a little fun by creating patterns, or use just one color for a more subtle update.

3. Give Your Cupboards a Facelift

If you are so inclined (and independently wealthy) you can drop a lot of cash on creating your dream kitchen. For those of us on a budget, however, why not consider home Improvement hacks that are affordable but still sensational?

New kitchen worktops from BBK Direct, for example, give you a lot of bang for your buck. Or give your kitchen a facelift by swapping out the cabinet hardware, which should run you just a few dollar per cabinet.

While you’re at it, paint the surfaces, and you’ll feel like you’re cooking in a brand-new space.

4. Get Playful with Pallets

Wooden pallets are inexpensive (or even free), environmentally friendly, and oh-so-versatile.

All you need are some basic tools and your imagination, and you can create boot racks, benches, bookshelves, headboards, desks, planters, and more. Check out this comprehensive list of creative uses for wood pallets.

5. Think Underneath the Box

Or, rather, the shelf. The space underneath shelves is often unused, but why not press it into service? Screw U-hooks into the bottom of a kitchen shelf to hang mugs or small utensils.

Try one of the best, most time-honored home improvement hacks there is: nail a jar lid to the underside of a shelf, then use the jar itself for storage. This works just as well for spices in the kitchen or craft supplies as for nails and screws in the garage.

6. Repurpose Containers

The truly frugal DIYer looks at every empty container and sees a possibility. An old kitty-litter tub, 2-liter soda bottle, or milk jug can store just about anything.

Short lengths of PVC pipe are handy for organizing rakes, shovels, brooms or mops. Or glue them to the underside of a garage cupboard to serve as power-tool holsters.

Inside, use toilet paper tubes to corral loose extension cords or power supplies to prevent tangles. Wrap Christmas lights around an empty wrapping paper tube. As our grandparents used to say, “Use it up, wear it out; make it do, or do without!”

7. Go Above and Beyond

You already have underbed containers to stash extra bedding and clothes. But why not utilize the space overhead for storage, as well? Naturally, you won’t want to suspend plastic tubs filled with sports gear from your living room ceiling, but it’s definitely doable in the garage.

Try a stuffed-animal hammock hanging from the ceiling in your kids’ rooms, or simply install shelving that goes up, up, up and away!

8. Chalk It Up

Chalkboard paint is one of the best home improvement hacks ever. Use it on kitchen cupboards, in the foyer, or even on glass storage containers.

By designating one chalkboard-painted area of your entryway or kitchen as a message board, you can always stay informed about what your family members are up to. It’s also great for jotting down phone numbers or reminders, labeling ingredients or measuring spoons, or simply keeping toddlers busy while you are cooking!

9. Adhesive Mirrors

Adhesive mirror sheets and tiles are another item whose uses are nearly limitless. You have no doubt heard about home improvement hacks that use mirrors to help open up a small space. They do that and much more.

Combine an adhesive mirror tile with a funky old “shabby chic” frame for an entryway decoration that’s as useful as it is attractive. Or place them on the wall behind your bathroom or bedroom mirrors to give you a 360-degree view of how fabulous you are!

10. Baskets and Bins

We can practically hear you saying “Baskets? I have enough baskets cluttering up my house!” but hear us out.

Instead of simply placing baskets or bins on shelves, tucking them under side tables, or putting them in those ubiquitous cube organizers, think about where else they might come in handy.

Use large baskets, affixed sideways to the bathroom wall, to store towels, or smaller metal bins, right-side-up, to hold personal care or beauty products above the vanity, where space is always at a premium.

Baskets and bins can also be used as shelves to show off your knick-knacks and tchotchkes, or simply to stash stuff that you want to keep handy but don’t want to display. Orient them however your purpose dictates.
