Finding Litter Robot Replacement Parts

Cats use litter boxes and unless you own one, you may think that’s better than walking a dog and scooping up the hot biscuits and carrying them around in a plastic bag until you find a trash can. But the litter robot takes that even a step further. You don’t have to touch the junk at all!

It’s a hooded litter box where your cat can walk inside, dump, and then walk out. What happens then is the Litter Robot starts to sift the poop from the litter, packs the waste into clumps, and then empties it into a lined poop drawer. You pull out the drawer once it’s full, cinch it, and then toss it! If only cleaning up after dogs were this easy!

Here’s how it’s so much better than a standard litter box. For one, it helps to take the odor out of the air and locks it in the waste chamber as opposed to wafting throughout the air giving your house that cat pee smell. Second, when you use the right kind of litter, the Litter Robot makes tight, solid clumps that are easy to separate from litter, reducing the amount of waste and dust your cat gets on their paws when they go in and out of the litter box.

And because there is less dust and waste for cats to clomp around on, when they come out of the Litter Robot, they’re not spreading their doo-doo and pee-pee around everywhere. Have we sold you already? Please – we haven’t told you the half of it! There are different versions, different types of litter, and accessories to go with…allow us to help.  We give to you the ultimate guide to the Litter Robot!

THE BEST LITTER FOR LITTER ROBOT

Let’s start with the best litter for your Litter Robot. It’s quite simple and universal no matter which version you own. Start with a “clumping” litter – preferably clay. Crystal litter works too but really good clay clumping litter has the perfect sized granules for creating those tightly packed clumps that help the machine to separate the litter from the waste.

Dr. Elsey's Premium Clumping Cat Litter

One of three options we found for you is the Premium Clumping Cat Litter from Dr. Elsey’s Store for owners of multiple cats. It has everything you need if you own a Litter Robot because it is made to work in cat poop sifting machines. It prides itself on creating unbreakable clay clumps that are moisture-free, resulting in a much cleaner litter box (and floors). It is deodorant free and nearly 100% dust free.

Another bonus to using clay clumping litter is that clay helps the waste dry faster. If you live with both cats and dogs, you’ll want to get that mess dried up and cycled out as quickly as possible – before your dog can eat the clumps! Remember this point when we break down the different versions. The Litter Robot 3 has multiple cycles including a short 3 minute cycle whereas the original LR2 only has a seven minute countdown once your cat exits the machine.

Boxiecat - Extra Strength  Clumping Cat Litter

With litter, just remember that the tighter the clump, the less poop dust that comes out of the Litter Robot when your cat exits. Anyone who owns a cat and a non-mechanical litter box knows the pain of keeping the floors and kitty paws clean from litter box dust as they come and go.

Get the right kind of litter and you never have to worry about it again! One of the top brands in the industry is the Extra Strength Premium Clumping Cat Litter from Boxiecat. This proprietary and veterinarian-backed hard clay clumping litter takes odor control a step further. It infuses their formula with probiotics to help stop the odor problem before it starts – perfect for cat owners looking for super clean and odorless!

LITTER ROBOT 2 VS LITTER ROBOT 3

Say you already own a Litter Robot 2 but now you’re hearing that there is a new Litter Robot 3. Should you upgrade or are you good with your still highly functioning Little Robot 2? Well let’s examine the benefits of Litter Robot 2 vs. 3.

There is an upgraded version of the Litter Robot 2 that came out before the LR3 hit the stores. No matter which version, there are some features that are the same. Here’s what you get from both the classic Litter Robot 2 and the Litter Robot 3:

  • You Get the DC Power Supply Unit
  • A Waste Drawer with a Waste Line Indicator
  • It Comes Fully Assembled
  • It Comes with Carbon Filters
  • And All Can House up to a 13 Gallon Liner Bag

Now let’s get to the differences between the Litter Robot 2 and 3. Honestly, in essence, the biggest difference is whether or not you have one or two cats or three or four. One is better suited for smaller and fewer cats than the other. We’re talking about the Litter Robot 2.

How the Litter Robot 2 is Different:

Smaller cats of five to a dozen pounds are more comfortable in the LR2. It only fits up to three small cats. But if you only own one or two, it is the perfect size.

The LR2 begins the countdown process before it starts to sift the poo at seven minutes after the sensor detects that the chamber is empty. The sensor in the LR2 is built into the step inside the machine’s entryway. If your cat doesn’t step on it going in or out, the machine won’t detect your cat and thus the machine won’t start.

Finally, when it comes to removing the waste, you have to change it every three days or so if you have two cats but if you only have one, you can get away with about a week before the waste drawer gets full.

The thing is, there is no signal to indicate when the waste drawer is full on the LR2 – you just have to keep checking or stick to a regular schedule. This is important because if your poop drawer is full, the machine won’t cycle on.

How the Litter Robot 3 is Different:

There are some fundamental differences between these two versions where the Litter Robot 3 has attempted to make improvements on the classic version. For instance the LR3 is overall only slightly bigger but much taller in order to accommodate multiple cats.

If you have a big, heavy, 20 pound cat, they will be much more comfortable in the LR3 than the LR2. The entryway alone is six inches taller than the original LR2 entryway. And your cats don’t have to step on anything in order to activate the chamber. The sensors in the LR3 are inside the “globe” and not on the entryway step so that it knows when your cats have entered and have exited and can get to work.

The timer for when to start the cycle of flushing the poo once the last cat exits is better on the LR3. You have three settings on this one: seven minutes, five minutes, and three minutes. And the waste removal process is better on the LR3.

There is an indicator on this one that lets you know when the drawer is full and needs to be dumped and you don’t have to dump it as often. You can go up to 10 days without changing the drawer if you only have one cat.

Litter Robot 3 vs. 2

You may be thinking, ‘didn’t we just go over the differences between the two?’ Yes we did, but we haven’t compared them yet. Here’s where we lay out what the Litter Robot 3 has that 2 does not. While they are pretty much equally effective, there are some features and improvements to the LR3, including a sleep mode.

It can be loud once it starts up. If you put it in sleep mode, it won’t rev up every time your cats go in and out of it in the middle of the night. It even has a night light so you don’t stub your toe on it when you get up to go to the bathroom.

It may seem like a small thing but the pour spout for adding litter is bigger and easier to fill on the LR3 than on the LR2. You can also get a few more accessories for the LR3 now than 2, including the Litter Robot 3 Connect kit. Most importantly, you get an 18 month warranty when you purchase the LR3 as well as a 90 day guarantee that if you are not satisfied, you get your money back.

Litter-Robot 3 Connect

If you think the Little Robot is something you need in your life, hang on to your ass (or is it hat?). The latest feature added to the LR3 is a Wi-Fi kit called the LR3 Connect App. Why do you need that? Well instead of checking the poop drawer all day, you can get an alert on your phone letting you know when the shitter’s full!

You can see your cats’ comings and goings to know when they are in or when they are out of the machine, when the machine is in cycle, when it cycles off, etc. Plus you’ll get alerts when there is something wrong with the machine that needs your attention. And get this – it even has a feature that helps you dig into the data on your cats’ bowel movements so that you can use that information to detect health problems in your kitties! This is a must-have for cat parents who are constantly on-the-go.

Litter Robot Accessories

Now that you are sold on the idea that you really need a Litter Robot, here are some of the accessories you are going to need to go with it:

Best Litter Robot Liner

It is possible to buy waste drawer liners from the makers of the Litter Robot for the branding and what not, but honestly any garbage bag that can hold up to 13 gallons will suffice.

Litter Robot Bag Size

A plastic liner bag that is smaller than 9 gallons probably won’t work. Anything bigger than 13 gallons will probably not fit tightly enough, so although you don’t need to hit the size exactly on the head, most users of the Litter Robot use 10 gallon bags, give or take a gallon. Here are two different liner bags that we think you’ll really like:

Litter Genie

We just love Litter Genie from the Litter Genie Store! It seems to go hand-in-hand with the Litter Robot. It’s just like a diaper pail but for cat litter. Your LR tamps down the odor but then what, you’re going to toss the bag in the trash? Hell no! Get this handy little bucket and seal all cat waste odors in after you empty the waste drawer. This pail can hold up to two and a half months worth of waste from one cat!

Litter Robot 3 Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing trouble with your LR3, we found some really helpful tips for the most common issues. For more, check out the Litter Robot website’s troubleshooting page.

Litter Robot Won’t Cycle

Is the shitter full? If your waste drawer is jam packed, the machine won’t cycle on. If that isn’t the case, then you are going to want to do a hard reset (turn off, wait 10 seconds, and then restart it).

Litter Robot Flashing Red Light (Sensor Not Working)

When the red light is flashing and not static it means that the sensor has been on too long. So your cat is hanging out there for over two minutes and the light is telling your buddy to exit so that it can flush.

Litter Robot Flashing Yellow Light (Not Sensing Cat)

If the yellow light is blinking, it means that the rotating hood is disconnected somewhere. You are going to have to take it off and reconnect the round chamber.

Litter Robot Repair

The Litter Robot has been around for a while now. So long in fact that any version you buy of LR2 today will be used. Because of that, there are all kinds of DIY videos for how to repair a broken down Litter Robot. Here is one from the Robotshop if you think you have the chops for it!

Otherwise, if you’ve gone through all the steps trying to DIY and you can’t fix the problem, you can have the experts fix it. Litter Robot has a repair and support line and can even come out and service your unit. Here’s the link (or call 1 (877) 250-7729).
