Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) Products for Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs

Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) – Products designed to Provide Women & Young Girls with More Choices for Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs

Part of my every day as an OB/GYN and women’s wellness professional is continually spent researching new information and innovative methods, procedures and Technologies specifically as they pertain to my patients. My primary goal is to educate, inform, and inspire women with steps they can take to live a healthier lifestyle.

Sex is a primal instinct…There are no two ways about it. However, sometimes it comes with unintended consequences such as unwanted pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs or STIs – Sexually Transmitted Infections). Although birth control pills and IUD’s help to prevent pregnancy, they do nothing to decrease STD’s. Today, we are limited to condoms as the only true prevention, and even then, used consistently and correctly, they are only 98-99% effective. Times are changing! As soon as 2020, we may have some new interesting and innovative, as well as some really “out there” products. In fact, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has offered $100,000 for the next generation of condoms.

New & Innovative Technologies for Reproductive Health

A new and innovative product which is most advanced in clinical testing is Tenofovir (TFV) gel, a microbicide from CONRAD, a leader in reproductive health, which could greatly impact against HIV and Herpes Simples virus (HSV-2). Phase 3 trials are underway in South Africa. Ultimately, MPT’s will provide simultaneous protection against STD’s while meeting the reproductive needs of women all around the globe.

A Creative Product to Prevent STIs and Promote Reproductive Health

The Origami Male condom. It’s a neatly folded piece of origami art. Not only is it more compact than regular condoms, but it’s also looser due to its sheath-like design. No more fumbling in the dark trying to put it on. No more complaining about not fitting right or having less sensation. Unfortunately, due to legal controversy, there has been a delay in the Origami Male condom release. Imagine that – A legal controversy arising around a condom that was the leader in Bill and Melinda’s NextGen condom challenge! Remember I talked about the “Really Out There” Technologies?

And for those techies out there, who feel they need to monitor their every move – literally…yes, there’s an app for that. It’s a wearable tracking device made by British Condoms, called the i.Con smart condom. Actually, this isn’t really a condom – it’s a tracking device that sits over the base of the condom. It’s a water resistant and light-weight ring with a nano-chip, sensors, a Bluetooth wireless transmitter and a battery. So what is measured? Calories burned, thrust speed, number, velocity as well as girth, session frequency and duration.

Worried about cyber security with this device? Per the manufacturer, British condoms, all data will be kept anonymous but you’ll have the option to share this revealing data with your friends, and even the world. The expected release for i.Con smart condom is late 2017.
