Page Experience Algorithm Update Confirmed by Google

Google has just announced the deployment of the Page Experience update for Desktop. This update comes nine months after the arrival of the Google Page Experience update on mobile, launched back in the summer of 2021.

This update was expected, as Google gave advanced notice at Google I/O in November 2021 that it would bring page experience ranking to desktop.

According to Google, this desktop algorithm update will incorporate the same ranking criteria implemented in the mobile update.

“This means the same three Core Web Vitals metrics: LCP, FID, and CLS, and their associated thresholds will apply for desktop ranking. Other aspects of page experience signals, such as HTTPS security and absence of intrusive interstitials, will remain the same as well.”

To help users better understand the features of this update, Google has provided a side-by-side comparison chart of the factors included in the Desktop vs. Mobile version.

As you can see, all of the page experience factors for mobile, except for mobile-friendliness (for obvious reasons), apply to desktop.

To support this ongoing update, Google had already launched the desktop page experience report in Search Console back in January to help people better understand Google’s page experience criteria.

Advice: You may want to use the report in Google Search Console to assess your website and get an idea of how well it is doing next month after the update has finished rolling out.

Final Thoughts: Why Do You Care?

Given that Google first announced the update in 2020, it should be no surprise to web professionals. Most people have been working hard to optimize their websites for user experience on mobile (and if you have not already begun mobile optimization for your website, you should). That being said, the Google Page Experience update for desktop should not cause any significant ranking changes for websites that currently perform well for these factors on mobile.
