How to use Newsjacking in Affiliate Marketing 2024

Newsjacking is one of the successful techniques of content marketing, the essence of which is to “borrow” news and use it to promote your own business.

The term itself was coined by American Affiliate Marketing expert David Scott in the early 2010s and gained popularity after the release of his book “Newsjacking: How to embed your ideas in the news and provoke mass media coverage”.

In his creation, Scott describes this technique as broadcasting the current agenda from an unusual angle, commenting on it all from the outside as an expert. The key purpose of such actions is to promote a company or brand in the media.

An important detail is that it is necessary not just to “hotly” present information, but to do it at the right time, right after the interest is generated and before the reader reaches the peak of excitement about what is happening.

1.         Promotes increased engagement in communities. Posts that play on a news agenda tend to get more reactions than regular posts.

2.         Attracts new audiences who were not initially interested in your product.

3.         Allows you to stand out from competitors who didn’t hustle and use the infopost.

4.         Increases user loyalty to the brand if the company’s response matches the customer’s views.

5.         Allows you to integrate into the news background without investing money in promotion.

6.         If you’re lucky, gives a significant increase in traffic from search engines and news aggregators.

7.         Promotes external links to your resource and increases the media weight of the company.

8.         Creates an associative row for the company. This is both an advantage and a challenge to keep in mind.

Newsjacking has six benefits:

•          Increased reader reach, and therefore recognition of the introduced business;

•          increased consumer engagement;

•          increased link mass through reposts;

•          increase in positive attitudes;

•          increase in leads, orders – without additional costs;

•          cheapness of content production.

Of course, it is not without pitfalls. The main disadvantage of this method of popularization is the need for a quick response, and it is simply impossible to anticipate and, moreover, to include newsjacking in the content plan.

The response was immediate…

And if in a classic text blog to place additional material is not a problem, then in the same Instagram, the entire sales funnel may suffer from this. Although, worthwhile important news – a thing infrequent, so such inconvenience pays off.

Use this technique can be used to advertise any business: information, trading platforms, services. Even in such “fickle” business as B2B, you can properly present the events of today under the sauce you need.

Of course, the specifics matter, and pizzeria will be easier to find the right news than a mining plant, but with careful analysis of the agenda, there will be a place for it.

    React quickly. Usually news becomes less interesting and relevant after a couple of days. A delayed post may work, but it will be less effective. React to an infodump within 24 hours. Make a useful habit and 1-2 times a day check the list with resources that are convenient for you.

    A specific person should be responsible for newsjacking, that will track down the news, write a post based on the information occasion.

    Always evaluate the popularity of requests. You want the information occasions in your interpretation to “shoot”, don’t you? Then tailor it to the top queries. Track them in any convenient source.

    Check the source! Always. By deceiving your audience, you are turning into a yellow press publication. Stop and think, is there any real evidence the author is referring to? Ideally, look for a primary source and check how things really happened. Often publications copy each other’s hype material, slightly rewriting the text. As a result, the truth slips away. Do not find yourself in this position – reputation is built up over years, and lost in an instant.

    Generosity is enriching. Share content not only on your site, but also on other platforms. Tell about the latest news in your field in the newsletter, Social Networks – anywhere!

1.         Select reputable and trusted sources that promptly release information with news in your niche.

2.         Subscribe to newsletters and updates.

3.         Social networks also often have information occasions: explosive news is often the first to appear there, and the media only replicate them.

4.         Monitor trends, set aside time daily to watch the news. Over time, you will begin to realize which of the news can “shoot” and bring traffic.

5.         Having found an upward interest, write qualitatively, but quickly. Newsjacking does not tolerate long coordination and drafting of technical task: while you think, others press the “publish” button.

6.         Mention your company or the author of the article in the piece. Pick the right pitch in advance to integrate the business into the news story.

7.         Share the news on social media pages, add it to a newsletter – this will allow more readers to see it.

8.         If the news is at the peak of interest, you should not waste resources on writing an article. The first in the issue will be large sites.

Post content on any of your existing channels.

This is where quickly written news concerning the global situation in your business sector will go well. For example, for IT and marketing, an example could be mass failures in social networks or changes in the rules of monetization of sites.

All other newsjacking ideas – on your own blog. From situational articles in the run-up to the holidays, to your own reaction to the sanctions imposed.

You can both repost announcements to attract the attention of readers, and create unique content for Telegram, Meta, Instagram and so on. And not only text, but also photo and video content.

Newsjacking video is perfectly viral not only inside the video portal. Competently composed description, based on key SEO-queries, will quickly go to the top of the issue. And as we know, people will now prefer text to video.

Media Placement in many media can be absolutely free if you provide authorial, interesting and relevant content. It is unlikely that you will get a link to your site, but the authorship with the indication of the company – without fail.

The American sports league NFL likes to use newsjacking. They have no problem with events, and sometimes they surprise a lot.

For example, after the news of the birth of an heir to the royal family, the company hosted a post dedicated to the event. It published a photo of soccer players with “monarchic” names and advised to name the child in honor of one of them.

Another interesting example relates to the games in Sochi, where one Olympic ring in the symbol did not open. Many firms picked up on this event. Marketers at Audi reacted quickly and linked the news to the brand. People took it as a premeditated move, as Audi’s slogan is “Four rings are all you need.”

An unusual example of newsjacking is a move from IKEA Canada. At the conference, soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo moved away from Coca-Cola products and noted that he prefers to drink plain water. The video of the event immediately went viral. IKEA instantly reacted by creating a bottle exclusively for water.
