Medical Artificial Intelligence: The Battle Google-IBM

Medical power will be in the hands of the designers of artificial medical intelligences. And medical ethics will no longer be produced by the doctor’s brain, but by the AI.

By 2030, there will be 1000 billion data in our Medical records due to the development of genomics, neuroscience and the many connected electronic sensors that will monitor our health. Since it is excluded that the doctor analyses these thousands of billions of pieces of information, when he only manages a few handles today, we are going to witness a radical transformation of medical power.

On July 11, 2017, the Rockefeller Institute in New York showed that artificial intelligence (AI) is 1000 times faster than a high-flying geneticist to analyze brain cancer. In medicine as elsewhere, the prophecy of Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, is fulfilled month after month: “We will make machines that reason, think and do things better than we -human- can”.

Medical power will be in the hands of medical RN designers. And medical ethics will no longer be produced by the doctor’s brain, but by the AI. Each medical RN will cost billions of dollars: the leaders of the digital economy will be the masters of this new medicine made in California, then made in China. But who will win this battle?

IBM and Google occupy the health field

Today, the two digital groups most invested in health are IBM and Google. IBM very quickly anticipated that AI would revolutionize the organization of care and courageously chose an ambitious technical path, which is currently facing difficulties in medicine despite the recruitment of remarkable researchers, such as the French Xavier Vasques. IBM’s investment is considerable, but recklessness does not always pay off, and some partner hospitals are not satisfied with Watson, IBM’s spearhead.

GOOD LEAVES >> Intelligence: Man against machine

Conversely, Google has achieved several medical feats using AI. In early 2017, a study published by Stanford University showed that Google’s AI analyzes skin cancers better than the best dermatologists. Google and its subsidiary Verily have proven that the AI can perform a complete cardiovascular check-up from a simple photo of our fundus from a sample of 300,000 patients, which is considerable since the great professors of medicine do clinical studies on a few tens or hundreds, exceptionally a few thousand, patients.

Verily will also follow 10000 volunteers equipped with connected objects to monitor their health for four years: sensors will be placed in their mattresses, regular samples of their secretions will be taken, their genome will be decrypted… This will help determine the early signs of disease and identify as yet unknown risk factors.

The digital giants invite themselves on the battlefield

The competition between Google and IBM is not over. IBM can pull itself together. And the battle will not remain confined to the Google-IBM duel: the other digital giants are coming. Microsoft presented a plan to beat cancer before 2026. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, announced on September 21, 2016, a first financing of 3 billion dollars to eradicate all diseases before 2100, thanks to revolutionary tools around AI.

Amazon has launched its “1492” division, which marks its entry into medicine and promises to shake doctors locked in a comfortable home. And Baidu – the B of BATX, China’s digital giants – is making great strides in medical AI. We are moving from a craft organized by a myriad of uncoordinated professionals, who manage very small volumes of data and patients, to a global industry in the hands of Gafa and BATX. Medicine is about to boil over!
