There’s No Space Like Whitespace

Tags: whitespace

When initially designing a website, it’s easy to get excited about all of the possibilities a blank page possesses. Going through your mind is an explosion of colours, fonts, text, effects, so on and so forth. But before all the action gets you carried away, take a step back and give your site some space. Literally, your site will need some Whitespace.

Perception

White space aids how your user will perceive your website. Will they feel intimidated and overwhelmed by mass amounts of information and distractions? Or will they navigate through a clean and organized layout? Hopefully the latter. The important thing to remember is that the information has to be legible. And if it isn’t, you are going to lose engagement, and overall site traffic. By including lots of whitespace in your design, your user is able take in the information better, mentally and physically.

Functionality

Whitespace is also necessary to have in a very functional sense. It can be difficult to see links and buttons in the midst of noise and chaos. If you want to have a call to action to direct users to your contact page for example, a clear button should be created on your website with lots of whitespace around it. Whitespace can also act as a function in itself. For example you can use whitespace to form columns, and separate pieces of text. When used correctly this can create a very clean and structured aesthetic for your website.

The Fold

Designers should also keep something in mind which is referred to as the the fold. It’s commonly known that users may not scroll down when arriving to your homepage. Because of this, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that important information should be placed at the top of your web page rather than the bottom. Whitespace will also help to accentuate this text, and ultimately grab the reader’s attention.

The bottom like is that users want to have a comfortable and easy experience on your site. While UX design does depend on your user, most people will want a site that is clean, uncomplicated, and gives them what they’re looking for in a simplistic and sophisticated way. All of these elements can be added to site, with just a little or a lot of whitespace. Find which design works for you.

Here are a few examples of websites that make great use of white space:
