How to take product pictures for a furniture website?

Furniture industry was once behind the others in terms of e-commerce adoption. But things have been changed during the past few years, The Furniture/Today’s 2016 Home Decorating Survey pointed out. 75% of upholstery buyers tapped online resources versus 60% researched by visiting a physical store. A whopping of 71% went online when purchasing area rugs.

So if you are thinking about starting an online furniture business, you have a booming prospect to hold on to. Here are our step-by-step guide on how to take photos for furniture. Hopefully, it will assist you building a trustworthy and reputable furniture store.

#1. Polish your product

Attention to perfection is the key to e-commerce photography and the same applies to furniture. Make sure there is no dust on your lens before Shooting. Anything with a reflective glass surface should be wiped by microfiber rags and polished so that there will be no fingerprints or stain. Unless the piece is purposely made rustic, dust the bunnies out and polish all corners so it looks the most gorgeous before shooting.

#2. Find the space and timing

As for space, you may want to choose the one that is at least three times as large as your piece with enough natural light. Be cautious of the direct sunlight if you are shooting next to a window or outside. If you’re shooting next to a window and you see bad shadows, you can diffuse the light with a sheet or white piece of paper. This will soften the sunlight and allow it to wrap around your object naturally.

#3. Background

To emphasize the furniture itself, a pure white background is an ideal option. The blank whiteness without the horizon in the back is called “infinity curve”. To create the infinity curve your own, simply place white rolls of paper that are three Times Larger than the product on background stands and put your product in the center. The neutral grey also provides a professional but not intrusive look.

#4. Use optical zoom
Let’s say you have invested in a good DSLR. The next step in choosing your lens. The key is to use your optical zoom properly so that the furniture will be showed in a close view without being distorted.

To do this, you’ll want your focal length, measured in millimeters, to be at its maximum. In other words, you’ll want to zoom in with optical zoom. This means you’ll need a large distance between the product you’re photographing and your lens, that’s why we suggested to choosing a space that is at least three times larger than the furniture itself.

#5. Shoot in different angles

When shooting, choose an angle that allows you to see the front, side and top of your furniture in one image. Shooting only the front-on will make your piece look flat, while shooting from an angle will give the customer a better visual representation of your product’s dimensions from all aspects.

#6. Take as many photos as you can
One or two pictures are definitely not enough to give your potential customers the idea of how the furniture feels. Remember, online shoppers can’t touch the product, so allowing them to feel as though they are walking around your product will encourage them to trust you as a seller and envision your piece as their own.
