Why Local Businesses Need to Optimize Their Google+ Page

When local listings are in play, Google displays them before organic results.

1. Local results display before organic results

Traditionally, Google’s organic results displayed just below their ads. Now (for local searches) there’s an added box of content that pulls data directly from Google+.

Your company can now bypass the ever-competitive world of organic search and get qualified leads directly from Google’s local listings.

For local companies, it’s a no-brainer.

2. Easy leads, little effort

It’s quite easy to create your Google+ page. To optimize it? -- not bad either. A little trouble (if you’d even call it that) can get you in the local mix and near the top of Google.

Here’s what to do.

  1. Get a Google account -- they are easy to create.
  2. Provide all the information Google requests. Contact and location information, a website link, descriptions, and whatever else -- it won’t take long.
  3. Get some photos in there. You should already have some on your website, Facebook, or some other listing. If not, it’s time. If you have a logo, get that in there too.

Lastly....

3. Compile reviews for an attractive listing

Everyone looks for reviews. Ok, most everyone.

The point is -- they are increasingly becoming an expectation for many customers. For companies in industries with lots of reviews (like restaurants) getting them is a must. In smaller niches, maybe reviews aren’t as competitive. But why not stand out?

The magic number is 5. Get 5 reviews and you’ll get the magnificent visual boost of having those bright little golden stars next to your company.

Encourage customers to leave reviews on Google. Ask them in person or send them a link directly to your Google+ page.

Use everything you've got

In today's internet age it has become increasingly difficult to get your brand in front of the right people. Companies are creating better websites with better content that ranks in organic results, drives traffic through social media, and converts customers.

So when the competition is rough,  do what Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, or any other competitive person would do -- everything! Cover all your bases -- especially the one's associated with Google.
