Are we a science driven society or not?

“The End,” my grandfather said when he switched on the T.V. He is a retired professor and most of his time is spend on watching T.V. and reading books. He wanted to see a Movie but it just got ended and he was little annoyed.

I told him that this movie will again come tomorrow afternoon and then he can watch it. He pacified a little and told us,” In our time, we had to walk to 7 km. to watch any movie and getting a ticket was a hard task,  but now there is T.V. where you can watch movies anytime you want and multiple movies channels are available too. T.V. has really simplified our lives.” I nodded in affirmative

My grandfather is 70 yrs. Old and he has witnessed a great change in our Society, living, education, healthcare and technology. Earlier it was a great task to get a proper education because schools were quite far and students had to walk a great distance, facilities were minimal and the study was limited to books only. But now it just a matter of some clicks and all the information is available to you easily.

Science has made our lives easier and tech friendly. Healthcare facility which was not available to the king of England in the 18th century is easily available to a common man. Social media has brought everyone on a digital platform on much closer too. Now people can easily know and watch what is going on in the world. Now you can watch about American presidential election in sitting your couch in New Delhi. Science has not only changed our present and shaping our future too. But there is a dialogue going on in many places that whether are we really become a science-driven society or just witnessing a change going on in the world.

Here are some clear advantages which have occurred only because of science-based approach of us-

  1. Rational thinking-

We all have heard about dark ages in Europe when everything was based on people’s beliefs and whims. Living standard of people was on all time law and diseases were killing millions. At that time people thought that these diseases are the curse and can be cured with any divine help only. It took a great time before there was renaissance era and science took a place of the driver of the society. It leads to the development in every human field like healthcare, agriculture, business, technology, research etc.

Since then we have not moved back and every day there has been a new discovery which changes our perception and thinking both.

  1. Advanced education-

Education has been at the center stage of scientific change ever since human knew that getting a formal education is quite necessary and having information about our world is really important for us. Now most of the school emphasize on science-based education where kids tend to learn with the practical approach and find the solutions on their own. Many discoveries which are being made today are only possible because our ancestors accept science with the open hand and believed in it.

  1. Finding new discoveries every day-

Every single morning, whenever I read the newspaper on at the last page there is a special column which has news about particular finding or research about any scientific topic. It really fascinates me and filled my curiosity to know more. I think science has invoked our curiosity and making us finding new and better.

  1. Equality-

The main aim of science is not to teach people only, but to enlighten them about their life and society. Now societies are much closer and there is the equilibrium between various races, beliefs, and genders.

For ex, women’s position in society has been strengthened and they can make a decision for their life without being dependent on their male family members. Even in public life, there are many examples where women have become much more powerful than men like Theresa may have become Britain’s new Prime minister, Hillary Clinton is running for the presidential post in America. These are the clear examples that women are much more aware of their position and rights now. It has become true only because of the scientific and rational approach to the people.

  1. Better health and increased life span-

Life expectancy in the 19th century was 33-40. In mid of 20th century it reached to 48 and in the 21st century, it is now 67.2. Such an increment is only possible because of better healthcare available to common people and efficient medical procedure.

Since the renaissance era, the main focus of scientists was on medical treatment of people and how can they cure most diseases easily and cheaply. Such a change has not come abruptly but it took a hundred of year’s practice and challenges which science has faced and conquered.

  1. Bringing people together-

Earlier there were explorers who used to travel to various countries and bring spices, clothes, fruits, vegetables, seeds etc. Like Marco Polo, Vasco De Gama, Christopher Columbus etc. They were the bridge between different countries and people, but with the advent of technology and communication devices, the distance between people shrink and now the world has become a small village where everyone can reach out to any other.

Earliest most communication devices were telegraphs through which a person could have sent a small message printed on a small paper roll. After than telephone came into the scene and we all are aware of its impact and importance.

Science has always been a great companion of humankind and continues to do so. Now a day’s people are overly dependent on technological devices and are forgetting real life connection with people. It was not the motive of people who had developed such electronic devices, but to connect people. Science has always been a great servant and will be if we want to and will lead us to a better future.
