For the speaking and listening component of Functional English, learners are expected to take part in an informal discussion. I have created a resource that encourages learners to think about how they might contribute to the discussion, which can be shared in an overall class-feedback session.
Learners can consider the following aspects of discussions:
- Their contributions - how can your learners contribute to the discussion? Could they ask questions, share views and ideas, encourage others or make responses?
- Adaptability - can the learners adapt their roles in the discussion? Can they listen, ask questions, share opinions, make recommendations etc.?
- Using appropriate language - are learners able to respond to the tone and topic with appropriate language? Can they respond to informality with relaxed and friendly/familiar vocabulary?
- Making extended contributions - Can they raise questions or share intriguing thoughts and opinions?
- Responses - are learners able to respond and take it in turns with contributions?
