“Earn your Leadership every day.” –Michael Jordan 

One of my students writes “How can I be a confident leader? Does it come from our personality or is it learnt?” My simple answer to that is… Yes, having certain personality traits do help in boosting your morale, but morale is a habit that can be learnt. In every step of my experience, I have encountered different flavours of leadership, and it differs from one person to another. Now, let me take you through the concept of ‘LEMON LEADERSHIP’. 

“L-E-M-O-N” stands for-

L, exists in the world of Ideas and asks the question … Why?  

E, creates the world of opportunities and asks the question … Why not? 

M, generates the world of systems and asks the question … How? 

O, survives in the world of tasks and asks the question … What? 

N, lives in the world of connections and asks the question … Who? 

This concept was developed by Brett Johnson from his own experience working with different organizations and people. Johnson realised that in an organization, people contribute differently when it comes to strengths, anticipations and decision making based on their personal traits. In his book, the author explicates that, by self-evaluation one can identify which of the above is his/her predominant working style. 

Many of you might be familiar with Vandana Luthra, an inspirational leader, who is the founder of VLCC Health care Ltd. Her profile speaks about Luminary style leadership where her journey starts with new ideas. She has an exceptional ability to foresee and extract concepts from the past and apply them in a meaningful way for future results. 

Entrepreneurs see opportunities in every problem, and they always apply their thoughts of ‘why not’, and sense the viability of it. Every time a pledge is taken to solve difficulties that arise. The voyage of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, founder of Biocon Ltd. portrays the Entrepreneurial leadership who look-up life with a world of opportunities. 

For Managers, ideas and desires do not matter, their work starts with proper planning which ultimately aims at the targeted results. One such manager is Naina Lal Kidwai, Country Head and General Manager of HSBC Group India, has a strong commitment towards her vision and confines creativity with her profession. 

Organiser builds an accountable formation that clearly defines the impulsive results, by leaving little room for confusion, and establishes fair expectations. Suchi Mukherjee, Founder and CEO of Limeroad, will be a perfect example of an Organiser who always aims at getting the job done. She is a short-term thinker who always applies thoughts and processes to achieve goals. 

Finally, Networkers achieve success by mustering the people. Building people’s capital is what they love. Shahnaz Hussian, founder of Shahnaz Herbals is one such personality who is socialistic. She shares her stories from the heart and ensures that the association shall bring people into the mix.
