Employee Engagement

Employee Engagement, it’s a buzz word that we all are always engaged with…

There has been much talk about employee engagement and how it is imperative that the organizational culture focuses on enhancing the energy, commitment and productivity of the work force.

A survey conducted in 2011-12 titled the Gallup’s State of the Global Workforce report indicated that only 15% of employees worldwide are engaged in their jobs. A more recent national employee engagement rate study conducted in the US has said that the employee engagement is now 30% across organizations. In India, reports indicate that this number is much higher.

Some of the experts have justified profitability, decrease in attrition rate and increase in saving to employee engagement, which ultimately resulted to improvement in organizational performance.

Given these inference, without a second thought organizations need to pay attention to improve these numbers.

While the typical definition of employee engagement is “a workplace approach resulting in the right conditions for all members of an organization to give their best each day, stay committed to their organization’s goals and values, remain motivated to contribute to the organization’s success” it is equally essential that organizations remain cognizant of the ‘New Mindset’.

Some ways in which organizations can look at enhancing their employee engagement can be:
  1. Build a culture that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship through increased intrapreneurship opportunities and activities
  2. Reward success and ensure that employee contributions are actively recognized
  3. As leaders is important to outline the vision of the organization that is inclusive and establish a culture of transparency, away from hierarchy
  4. As managers it is important to invest in the right people, align your teams with your targets and focus on training and development
  5. Communication in today’s multi-device world has become imperative and there has to be constant and continued communication/engagement from the leadership/management to make the employee feel like a part of a larger goal
  6. Make work Fun! Studies indicate that Happy Employees are 12% more productive than unhappy employees. Incorporating fun and playful elements into the culture will only help employees form better relationships at the workplace, engage better with your brand and feel motivated.
