Level 1 and Level 2 - Organisational Features
For the start of our new academic year, we taught the skill of organisational features through the topic of technology. The session allowed for discussions and open debates, reading articles based on the theme and locating layout features that are key to successful readers and tackling that question on both L1 and L2 reformed papers.
The first part of the session included a YouTube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvs7f4UaKLo which encouraged the students to think about a world consumed by technology. This then lead to a group discussion and debate of 'Technology does more harm than good'. I asked the learners to make a list of reasons to agree/disagree before opening up to the whole class.
We then read a couple of articles based on technology and disability/robots and apps taking over the world. This again prompted some nice discussions. Both texts are quite challenging but this naturally moved the focus onto how we can locate the main points and key information easily and successfully. Here we talked about titles, sub-headings, bold, font size, bullet points, numbering, boxes/sections etc.
The final part of the session included an organisational card-sort activity followed by some final comprehension questions based on the texts. The students could choose which text that they wanted to work with.
