Analysis Mat - Language and Structure

GCSE English Language - Planning to Analyse

For both paper 1 and 2 for Edexcel and AQA English Language, learners need to be able to analyse language and structure for effects such as interesting a reader or showing a particular theme such as tension, a change in atmosphere or feelings for example. The marks available for this are considerable on both papers so learners need to gain some confidence in how to tackle the question.

For my own learners, they sometimes struggle with organising a sound response. They would be great at making a point, or identifying language but I found they were weaker in exploring the impact it would have on the reader and the connotations behind particular words within their analysis. I always encourage my students to not be afraid of their own interpretations. But equally, they're aware that I hate seeing 'makes the reader read on'. Great - but why?

I have created an analysis planning mat that can be blown up onto A3 and laminated so that learners can use them with marker pens. It enables peer discussion and support before they can attempt at a structured response
