GCSE English Language - Starter
This starter activity is brilliant to engage learners while studying the theme of 'Danger in a
Hostile Environment'. The activity works alongside a study of the texts "I fell through Arctic Ice" by Gary Rolfe and 'Extract from Scott's Diary'. The texts are typically used for the AQA English Language exam board, but I have also used them as part of my Edexcel delivery.
For the task, learners are to discuss in small groups 5 survival items that they would take with them on a discovery expedition and they should be encouraged to explain why these items have been chosen. You could then write down all the examples on the board and then the class need to decide on their top 5 in a whole group activity.
