The Importance of a Routine

Tags: routine

As much as everyone loves summer vacation, I think most people can agree that it is difficult to set up a Routine during breaks from school or work.  However, routines are extremely important to people’s mental and physical health. Specifically, they can help alleviate anxiety and stress by allowing more time in the day to get everything done.  Instead of allowing all your work to pile up, establishing a routine will turn the work into a habit, and you will find that you are working less each day.

Now that we know the benefits of having a steady routine, let’s explore some ways that you can set up routines in your daily life.

Morning Routines

Mornings start with waking up.  As much as you might love waking up without an alarm during the summer, try to ensure that you wake up around the same time every day.  Your body will thank you. Then, starting your morning with some food will make a difference in how the rest of your day goes. Even a small breakfast will help.  Finally, try to get moving right away! Although scrolling through social media in bed is always nice and relaxing, it is best to get your day started as quickly as possible.

Daytime Routines

These routines are not the same for every person, and depend on what you have planned for the summer.  However, no matter your schedule, it is best to ensure that you incorporate exercise and healthy eating into your routine.  This will keep your body energized, and give you the strength to do all the other activities that you have planned for the day!

Evening Routines

The most important evening routine is going to bed at the same time every night.  The primary benefit of this is that your body will know when it is time to go to bed, and thus, you will sleep better overall.  However, going to bed at the same time every night is not enough. Make sure to turn off all electronics at least a half hour before bed.  Instead of watching TV, try reading a book or doing something calming such as drawing. This will tell your body that it’s time to wind down for the day.

So how can you ensure that you stick to a routine once you do not have the structure of work or school?  There are plenty of ways! Download an app that keeps track of everything you have to do in a day. Or if you are not a fan of technology, use a daily planner or a notebook.  Whatever method you use, remember to be patient, as you will not settle into a routine instantly. Be kind to yourself and do not worry if you slip up and sleep until noon!
